When my car shifts into 5th, from easily accelleration, it makes a humming noise instantly, and stops the instant i let off the gas. Any ideas?

Any vibration associated with this? Does it change with speed, or is it a constant tone? How many miles?

SOUNDS LIKE REAR END PINION BEARING GONE BAD, COMMON ON EARLY LS.

why would a pinion bearing whine only happen in 5th gear?

so much torque is on the driveline now, not the transmission... my two cents...

If it's going to make noise, it would make it whenever the driveline is unloaded, in any gear, as long as you're going fast enough to make the bearing 'rattle' for lack of a better term.

Easy enough to check though, jack the car up take the plug out of the rear end, stick your finger in. If the oil looks like grey metallic paint, you got problems, if it's clean, (could still be cloudy) no metal, you're fine. You might still want to change the lube though... You're probably close on milage and lube is cheaper than the rear end. I've got 60k on mine, and I'm changing it here shortly. 75w-140 redline NS synthetic.

Where were you a month ago before I bought my car? :(

What was the cause of these bearings going bad?

the early ls cars had the magical 3.31 rear.. great overdrive and top speed, but get em in 5th gear and lug em and you eat the preload on the pinions up, ( worked for a lm dealer and have seen it often...) hence in late o2 the cars started to come with a 3.58 like the ls v6 had all along... the v6 cars really had no problems with the ratio at all, and the v8s did so much better!!!! in fact on my 00 v8 base, i upgraded to 3.58 out of an 03 t bird, ( ls has an electrical brake, t brd had mechanical parking brake) and holy :q:q:q:q!!! wanna see power outta the hole? yikes!!! wishing now, that i never sold it for the 02.... gonna have to do it again!!!!!!! haha!!

Any idea if it's covered under warranty, cause i know the leaky valve cover gaskets were and stuff.

P.S. Thanks for the help, i thought it was the muffler :slam

Did the sport cars have the 3.58's in them in '00? I thought there was something about them going up and down with the ratio there for a while...

all the 00 cars i ever saw with the v8 had 3.31 in them, v6 cars all of them had the option of 3.31 or 3.58, most had 3.58 in em....

didnt like your magnaflow is that right? Reading the signature. I have mine as well. Wish I would have kept the stock system on stand by.
