Sorry if this is a dumb question, but i did a search and came up with nothing.

Is there any benefit to driving using SST instead of just putting the car in drive?
Either in better MPG, or performance?

Or is it just to be cool?

If you want to drive silly, either for mpg purposes or performance purposes, SST helps you do it :D (shift sooner/later, hold gears, etc)

Performance and responsiveness is FAR better with SST - even with an aftermarket tune.

If you live in a mountain region, as I do, it can be beneficial for engine braking going down long inclines and not riding your brakes and going up hill so the transmission is not constantly hunting for a gear.

I also use it to lock in lower gears in the winter on very icy condition to use engine braking so as not to use brake and even with traction control on to start in 2nd and even 3rd gear, very beneficial.

More wear on the tranny, but more fun to use :D
