I like Fox Body Mustangs, but why do a v-8 swap into a car originally 4 cylinder, when the v-8 models can be had so cheaply?

I am just curious as you may know something I dont and I am pondering a purchase of a fox body. :)

I'd go this route too to make it right from the ground up. Fox v8s are still $5k+ around here. My dream is to 351 a 4-eye w/ Maximum Motorsports suspension and Cobra R brakes for my boy's first ride.

I know that in michigan, if you throw a v8 into a car titled with a 4 banger you get a insurance discount. Sounds good, looks like a nice rust free body. I personaly prefer the notch backs

A valid reason a Mustang magazine gave for buying a 4 banger body (other than cheapness) was that the chassis will have been subjected to less stress.

the next motor to go in here is a 460 big block

I bought this clean no abuse 4 cyl for 500 bucks... then found a donor convertible for 450.. the vert had a rbuilt 5.0 a rebuilt 5 speed trans and a 8.8 rear with 3:73 gears... I gutted the vert down to a shelf and through all the good 5.0 parts on to the 4cyl... did this all for under a grand... your probably asking your self... why not drive the vert.... It was :q:q:q:qed up.. every panel was dented and had no interior...

Now i have a chassis unabused, cheaper insurance, Cleaner 5.0 for cheap...

after all said and done i only have 1500 bucks in the price of both cars and misc parts..

I also made money off the vert because it was a gt vert, so i sold a lot of parts like the body kit off of it this build pretty much budgeted it self... this all start with the sale of a 5.0 short block to buy the car...

The car now has a Power max Comp cams cam, BBK smog legal shorty headers, t5 Wc 5 speed, 8.8 with 3:73 gears, Stock port E7 heads and stock ported intake. the chassis has a weld in Troque box kit and a set of home made Sumbframe connectors to keep this straight body straight! the next mod is going to be a 150 shot of the great Nitrous oxide!

oh and the car started life as a 4 cyl 2.3L automatic..... now is a 5.0L V8 5 speed! only took 2 1/2 months!

Here's a notch with a 460 big block in it I spyed up at diamonds shop. Suppose to run low 9's, high 8's if it hooks up. 460 should be a riot.

I don't get this? Am I thinking too hard why this would warrant a discount on insurance? I would think that most people who upgrade to a V8 are going to drive faster, and maybe a little more recklessly (not everyone obviously) so why give a discount to do this? Don't get me wrong, I like the idea but I don't understand...

you dont tell them it is a V8 you just give them the Vin.... when they look it up it come back as a 4cyl... if something happens you play dumb and say its not my fault you didnt ask the engine size! then your in the clear because your paying insurance on a 4cyl that has a V8 ....

something those gay ass honda guys cant do LOL!

Well yeah I understand that of course it's cheaper to insure a 4 cyl Mustang than a V8! AND it made sense to me that you wouldn't tell them...
But this statement makes it sound like you actually tell the insurance company what you did and you get a discount:

I know that in michigan, if you throw a v8 into a car titled with a 4 banger you get a insurance discount.

that's the part I didn't understand - why you would get a discount if the insurance company knew about it!

Thanks for clearing that up! :headbang:

Did you upgrade the suspension? I thought about buying a 4cyl and doing a swap but ended up buying a rebuilt title 92 GT with basic mods for 2800 as a daily driver while I work on the LS. I'll end up selling this one and most likely buying another fox body so I can do what I want with it. I heard the 460 swaps have horrible handling though and are only good as drag cars.

Honestly the difference to insure both are miniscule now. The newest fox is 16 years old. I Bought a '92 GT in '95 at 19 years old. $385 a month car payments and $175 a month full coverage. I only had it 10 months. :(

I'm pretty sure it's on the wall and reflecting off the paint but either way it looks awesome. I can't even imagine how much that paint job cost.

Actually, I believe the color is called Calypso. My friend used to have a '91 LX 347 in that same color.

lincoln00
March 29th, 2009, 12:06 PM
I don't like the color ether.... its going to be painted silver... and im thinking about running to black racing strips down the middle...

I only bought this car because the body is super striaght.... for a 92 it only has 2 small dents on the who car! and the interior is almost like brand new! really only needs carpet and door panels...

Just my thoughts, but I think the racing stripes have been WAY to played out and IMO don't look good on fox-stangs. If you do them make them wide and about a inch or two apart. Just don't do the little 5 inch wide stripes, that looks trashy....................Again IMO.;)

lincoln00
March 29th, 2009, 08:38 PM
agreed on the strip width
