guinnessman February 16th, 2009, 02:40 AM Hey guys, i just got back from a cruise, my vacation is funny i swear it-valentines day was spent on my car haha.
Anyway, i was on the highway, cruising, and this white camaro flashes it's lights behind me-granted i was doing around 55-60 in the fast lane. He rode my bumper for a bit, then i heard him hit it... He must have been stock, all i heard was a faint engine growl (my windows closed). I floored it as he was approaching my passenger door....i was even up till 100?!?!?!?
I then slowed, changed lanes and he was off-he didn't stop. Hell i'm not gonna get a ticket for this. Although it was fun. He did drop back for a second when he shifted, leading me to believe that he was 6 speed.
Maybe the removal of mufflers gave me a good HP increase-or was this luck?? Shouldnt he have walked me bad considering Z28's are lighter?? It was an Lt1-not the Ls1 bodystyle/headlights etc.
kustomizingkid February 16th, 2009, 04:12 AM Sounds like fun...
Don't expect hacking off the mufflers to have gained you much of anything power wise... but the Mark isn't a total slouch and those Z28's aren't that fast especially since most seem to be beat to piss.
98LSC32V February 16th, 2009, 05:18 AM Sounds right, you should be able to hang with an LT1 from a roll. From a stop he will take you though.
XLRVIII February 16th, 2009, 09:15 AM sounds about right.. LT1's are typically easy prey...unless modded.
NateRW21 February 16th, 2009, 09:37 AM if you want to drive that slow, get in the right lane
unity February 16th, 2009, 11:40 AM So let me get this right, you are one of those asses that hover in the damn fast lane. And when someone flags you to get your slow ass over you speed up?
I hate people like you - A LOT. And no, I am not kidding.
Aquabrit February 16th, 2009, 11:53 AM +1 on that!
Fast lane hoggers are a damn nuisance.
NateRW21 February 16th, 2009, 02:02 PM So let me get this right, you are one of those asses that hover in the damn fast lane. And when someone flags you to get your slow ass over you speed up?

Pretty much what I was thinking... although I was in a more civil mood this morning; apparently you don't hold back!
unity February 16th, 2009, 02:09 PM I usually do... but after living in Chicago for a while you learn to appreciate driving more :D
MarkVIII93 February 16th, 2009, 02:18 PM I had a half length on a bone stock ls1 bird all the way till 30 ft before the traps... That was my 14.0 at 101 pass. I think he ran a 13.99.. auto btw
NateRW21 February 16th, 2009, 02:59 PM I usually do... but after living in Chicago for a while you learn to appreciate driving more :D
Oh I totally understand... I lived in Germany for 2.25yrs, where people actually know how to drive, and you can WILL get ticketed for driving in the left lane when either the right lane is open, or you're going the same speed or slower than the right lane... Flash to Pass (what the camero was doing) is actually a rule of the road and as such, is followed (as well as blinker to pass).
Yeah, I feel you...
kustomizingkid February 16th, 2009, 03:21 PM There are two kinds of drivers, Idiots and Pissed off ones, and if you aren't pissed off... well.....
XLRVIII February 16th, 2009, 03:30 PM I had a half length on a bone stock ls1 bird all the way till 30 ft before the traps... That was my 14.0 at 101 pass. I think he ran a 13.99.. auto btw
I drug a 12.90 WRX thru the traps with my hazard lights blaring in his face...
I treed the crap out of him.. but he literally LEAPED up even with me.
But with every gear change the mark 8 slid just a little further ahead.
When I say gear change, I mean "HIS" not mine.
The long legged 4r70w had him changing two gears to my one.
He's shift once, fall back, shift again, catch up...
At the stripe he had like 6 MPH on me, he was coming... but the win light did not burn brightly in his lane.
he ran 12.95ish to my 14.1
we were staging the car, he ran up there and lit both bulbs and put the car on the rev limiter.
I lit the first bulb then waited... and waited.. while he was over on the other lane "BA-BA-BA" on the rev limiter.
Finally he let off the gas, and I lit the staged bulb...(grins)
The tree came down and I was off, while he was trying to build boost.
so, I killed him on the tree, and drug his azz the whole way with my hazards blaring at him.
guinnessman February 16th, 2009, 03:31 PM Keep in mind this was at 1AM. In my area state troopers sit and wait at that time, to catch you going over 60. That's why i was going alittle slow.
I was stupid to bite when this guy floored it-could have gotten a big ticket for that, but i am just a little kid inside even though i'm 28 lol.
XLRVIII February 16th, 2009, 03:33 PM Keep in mind this was 1AM. In my area state troopers sit and wait at that time, to catch you going over 60.
If you "take it to the track"
you'll quickly see that contests like this on the street are meaningless and pointless, and as you said..dangerous.
going to the track was one of the best things I ever did to prevent myself from "doing st00pid crap on the streets.
Give it a shot, but..you cant just go "do it once" and expect to be cured.
(lol)
guinnessman February 16th, 2009, 03:36 PM You're 110% right my friend, i very rarely do stuff like that-did it alot when i was younger (we all did). Next time i wont be an "ass" like mr tough guy said, and just cruise in the middle lane.
Chadly February 16th, 2009, 05:53 PM Unfortuniately they dont have a track here. The closest one is over 2 hours away. I am trying to get the base general to build one on base. We get a lot of young Marines out here who have thier little ricers and want to go fast as hell on these crappy highways and end up getting hurt or killed.
This is one more thing I miss about NC. I lived 4 miles from my local track there.
shiryu0 February 16th, 2009, 06:02 PM california speedway (or whatever the heck its called now....) is the closest thing over here........and that freaking sucks :( ........they do have autocross in San Diego which is closer to me though, one day ill make it to that :)
slowmkviii February 16th, 2009, 09:48 PM sounds about right.. LT1's are typically easy prey...unless modded.
easy pray I think not a stock auto lt1 on the freeway is the only way a stock mark will have even a chance if they have as little as headers and exhaust it will be the camaro all day long
and before you start to argue we have a LT1 Z and have raced many many times on the street and on the track
chicken February 16th, 2009, 10:30 PM So let me get this right, you are one of those asses that hover in the damn fast lane.
but i thought the opposite in WI? at least thats how all the cheese heads drive down here, 5 under in the left lane.
unity February 17th, 2009, 09:16 AM You think WE are bad? Have you even came across an Iowegian? THOSE ARE THE WORST!!! Especially along the Mississippi where you cant pass most of the time! Or they drive slow in front of you, 30 in 35, so you loose track of a convoy of other Marks! LOL
XLRVIII February 17th, 2009, 09:47 AM easy pray I think not a stock auto lt1 on the freeway is the only way a stock mark will have even a chance if they have as little as headers and exhaust it will be the camaro all day long

man, I see stock LT1 cars here run anything from 14.70's to 15.30's..
those are right in the ball park of a stock mark 8's range.
granted there are many faster lt1's with light mods..but I've seen stone stock ones run the above times many MANY times.
or take the new GTO for instance.
two different GTO's at two different tracks on back to back weekends.
I saw one in baytown run a 14.25 I was not impressed.
Then the next weekend at evadale I saw another one.. so I watched it run.
it ran a 14.25..it kinda shocked me that
1 they both were so slow
2 they both ran the same number
makes me think a new GTO wouldn't make a bad bracket car..haha
anyways.. no arguement from me sir.. just some reflection upon my personal experience.. yours is no more or less valid than mine.
haha
XLRVIII February 17th, 2009, 09:50 AM Unfortuniately they dont have a track here. The closest one is over 2 hours away.
come on chadly dont be a WUSS! (joking smile)
for over 5 years, tiffany and I drove TWO mark 8's 82 miles ONE way to a dragstrip.
From one side of houston THRU friday afternoon rush hour traffic.
our friday racing commute was often 2 hours.
COME ON MARINE...
if "tiffany can do it".
(peer pressure smile)
XLRVIII February 17th, 2009, 09:54 AM I am trying to get the base general to build one on base..
Get Col Klinger on the job.
you have to have a Col Klinger there....right?
get him to call up the the corp of engineers and tell them to send some Seabeee's over.
you need a small runway for the generals private plane.
2000' of asphalt with 300 feet of concrete on the end and it needs to be 20 feet wide.
That'll give you a good 1/8th mile with plenty of shut down.
kustomizingkid February 17th, 2009, 03:59 PM Every base needs a race track!
chicken February 17th, 2009, 08:38 PM You think WE are bad? Have you even came across an Iowegian? THOSE ARE THE WORST!!! Especially along the Mississippi where you cant pass most of the time! Or they drive slow in front of you, 30 in 35, so you loose track of a convoy of other Marks! LOL
LOLOLOLOLOLOL we get everyone out here so its always fun!
96mark8 February 17th, 2009, 09:08 PM man, I see stock LT1 cars here run anything from 14.70's to 15.30's..

Thats sucks for a GTO i always thought they ran door to door with 03 cobra's. dont they have 400 hp and 6 speed manuals? how heavy are they?
kustomizingkid February 18th, 2009, 01:29 AM Tommy.... about the GTO they have a super well programmed "launch" system in the computer, It helps them leave hard, but never spin. I got to drive one and it wouldn't spin and always left the same way and all you have to do is push the pedal to the floor.
XLRVIII February 18th, 2009, 09:16 AM Thats sucks for a GTO i always thought they ran door to door with 03 cobra's. dont they have 400 hp and 6 speed manuals? how heavy are they?
Once they get some Mods on them they are very very capable cars.
I'm sure as KK mentioned there is ALOT of crap in the PCM tuning that keeps them from KILLING the IRS.
Rich88LSC February 18th, 2009, 11:43 AM Still a well driven 6.0L GTO should be in the mid 13s. Even the 350hp 5.7L ones should be able to break into the 13s
The omen February 18th, 2009, 12:25 PM I used to have a 2003 cobra and wiped up many of gto's:) Damm do I miss that car. I am going to start looking for a 03/04 cobra drivetrain to put in the mark:0...........that would be sweet!!!
XLRVIII February 18th, 2009, 12:53 PM . I am going to start looking for a 03/04 cobra drivetrain to put in the mark:0...........that would be sweet!!!
yes that'd be very very sweet.
but IMHO i'd put leave the drivetrain in the cobra and just take the motor.
hooking that motor to a properly prepped 4r70w will be litereally unstoppable.
think, no boost drop on shifts, long legged gears that begged to be supercharged.
build it..smiles will come!
XLRVIII February 18th, 2009, 12:57 PM that would be sweet!!!
WAIT..uhmm.. I just saw the first gen pic in your sig file.
you'd be better off finding a second gen mark 8 that needs a motor and putting the terminator motor in it.
the second gen is already obd2 and the tuning solutions are all ready in place.
also the motor fits under the stock hood with no scoops or bs required.
putting that motor into a first gen isn't gonna be an easy swap nor easy to tune once it's installed.
just this week a decent second gen with a broke motor didn't sell on Ebay with a 1K starting bid.
kustomizingkid February 18th, 2009, 01:38 PM If I happen across $5-$7k I'll do an 03/04 Cobra motor swap.
MarkVIII93 February 18th, 2009, 02:21 PM If I happen across $5-$7k I'll do an 03/04 Cobra motor swap.
Likely never will happen. You can get extremely well equipped drivetrains from mpsautosalvage.com.
kustomizingkid February 18th, 2009, 02:29 PM You are so smart... a college student not have $5000 kicking around in their sock drawer... Weird!
The omen February 18th, 2009, 02:56 PM yeah! That does make sense to find a obd 2 car and I do agree that one can be found for 1k with a bad engine becouse you can find them for 2k-3k running good;) I am trying to buy a house soon but once I do that, then it's the search is on to build a nasty mark viii! I work for amtrak and we settled our contract so they owe us some serious back money so that = 03/04 COBRA TERMINATOR!!!!!!!
fokus83 March 26th, 2009, 03:28 PM but i thought the opposite in WI? at least thats how all the cheese heads drive down here, 5 under in the left lane.
bah.... the flat landers come up here driving 60 -65 in the LEFT lane and "flash to pass" when you're doing 80 in the RIGHT lane. We've always figured that they hit the WI border and say "We're free!" no more tolls and camera enforcement...
unity March 26th, 2009, 04:30 PM Im happy with my 04 power plant. May not be a "Cobra" intake, but it has superior exhaust cams.
