anylouder? December 30th, 2008, 02:27 PM i traded in my LS today. i took a $3000 hit, but it was worth it. it was a great car and i didnt experience 1/2 the issues anyone else here has come across.
a wheel bearing, steering knuckle (ball joint) struts and a front sway bar.
but things were to come. it was starting to miss from the oil/coil issue. ABS and traction control lights started to come on and off for no reason and a funny burning rubber smell coming from the front of the motor?
i will be back though. i plan on picking up a 6cyl manual sport LS in the next year or so.
loved the car, hate the issues...and needed an SUV (own a house and have a kid in LOVELY winter wisconsin)
best of luck to all of you with your lemons and the few good runners out there.

It might be a belt. My 06 LS had a very loud squeaking sound when it was started in the morning (worse in cold weather). The serpentine belt was abnormally worn, so the dealer replaced it. The problem came back a short time after that and continued until I traded the car this past Monday.
My guess is that a pulley was going bad on one of the engine components (no idea which one). It very cold weather, one of the pulleys would stick for a few seconds after starting the engine in the morning. Of course, the belt would rub over this stuck pulley and would cause a small billow of smoke that smelled like burning rubber. Do you hear a squeaking or ticking noise coming from the engine compartment after you start your car in the morning?

Funny thing is, it makes no noises on start-up in the cold. No hesitation, runs smooth. I took a look last night and couldnt see and pulleys sticking and belt looked to be running fine.
kleetus January 13th, 2009, 07:29 PM Funny you should mention that... I kinda have the same issue as well. As long as it's above 40F it's quiet... below that and it sounds like a turbine running, then it calms down as the car warms up. What's interesting is it almost sounds like it's circulating two different weight oils, and they're trying to mix when you first start it up.
I do get the smell every so often too. Belt looks normal. Car has 135K on it, and in the last 65k I've had it, I never put a belt on it. Yeah I should probably throw a belt at it, but I really dread the idea of that fishing trip that I know will ensue. Plus I want a newer one...
For grins one day I thought it was the transmission making the racket, so I put it in gear and left the E brake on and took the idle to 1500 in 3rd gear. The whining calmed down pretty quick. I don't know if it was that, or something else warming up quickly as well.
Guess I'll find out what it is when it catches fire, blows up, or locks up...
