whatsupadrian February 1st, 2005, 03:22 AM ok a few question i have about these angel eyes, the picture looks a bit deceiving.
is this the new blue CCFL halos? they look too brite for leds. and if so is it $290???
GrayGhost1 February 1st, 2005, 06:14 AM Those are NOT CCFL rings. Those are the LED rings. The life span on the LED's suck. I stopped selling them because they burn out way too quickly. CCFL's are the way to go.
FreeFaller February 1st, 2005, 08:15 AM Yeah, I always thought the Demon Eye (LED) kit looked alot more "noticable" but what is it they say... "The Brightest star burns the shortest"
LuxurySport00 February 1st, 2005, 09:18 AM i also had LED rings installed.. looked good when the car was parked at night but with the lights on and during the day it just didn't fly.
then was the fact that LED just doesn't last like Ken mentioned.
i'm going to be getting CCFL in the comming months.
whatsupadrian February 1st, 2005, 08:08 PM so how much we talkin for blue or red CCFLs and when do you predict that their price will drop?
GrayGhost1 February 2nd, 2005, 06:20 AM I can get the red CCFL's but they are twice the price as the white or bluish colors. I'd say once something new comes out to replace CCFL that the price will drop on them.
I'm working on a CCFL DIY kit for the LS guys. It should be available in March. I'd like to get away from installing the kits and this will be the best way to offer a great product at a reduced price. This way it's better for the customer and much easier for me.
LuxurySport00 February 2nd, 2005, 08:59 AM what is your guess that the price will be for this DIY kit?
GrayGhost1 February 2nd, 2005, 10:03 AM After looking at BMW DIY kits from various sites I'd say around $249.
LuxurySport00 February 2nd, 2005, 11:20 AM is that including the headlights?
Quik LS February 2nd, 2005, 11:25 AM is that including the headlights?
that wouldn't be DIY.
eL eS February 2nd, 2005, 11:37 AM I have read a few things online discussing the spontaneous combustion of the DC to AC converts for CCFL kits. Who makes the power converters for this kit?
LuxurySport00 February 2nd, 2005, 11:57 AM oops.. i didn't mean installed in the headlights.
GrayGhost1 February 2nd, 2005, 12:11 PM is that including the headlights?
No, it would be just the rings, mounting clips, installation guide and technical support. I'm currently the only one that has mounting clips for these rings. Don't be fooled by another person selling these on eBay. The mounting clips I use are the exact ones used for the BMW installations.

The DIY kits will come with a wiring harness to prevent the electrical fires. I'll be the only to provide the wiring harness.

Without giving up trade secrets just how do teh wiring harness' provide fire/fault protection. it seems in the cases I have read the inverter combusted despite being installed properly or by professional. Is it an HSD, heat sensing device, that breaks at the first sign of overheating. Power inversion is very heat intensive; I want this for my car but I don't want to burn it up. I do carry a fire extinguisher though JIC. :)

GrayGhost1 February 2nd, 2005, 01:06 PM LSE grilles come with everything you see pictured. The grille, mounting tabs, emblem and the whole nine yards.
As for the inverters I'll call my supplier and ask him what the low down is on them. I'd rather not speculate but I haven't seen any problems. The only problem I've seen is failure. They just go out.

Well everything has a break point. In the case of failure it is likely due to vibration or thermal degeneration. Does the supplier provide a warranty replacement?
eL eS February 2nd, 2005, 01:12 PM For the DIY kit. Do I have to bake my headlights and seperate them to install or can the rings be installed through the bulb mount.
I have had mine apart already to fix the moisture problem and am weary of undoing my work.

Here is the response to my supplier on the rings and transformers:
"They have a "defeat" component in there, if there is a problem, they blow."
As for a warranty, there is a 1 year warranty on all components on the kit. As for installation, you would have to separate your headlights to install these.

eL eS February 2nd, 2005, 01:47 PM Darn it. Darn it Darn it.
eL eS February 2nd, 2005, 05:30 PM man I checked the parts for this stuff online and it seems that a motivated DIYer could do this for less than 75 bux. The inverters are around 30 to 40 bux and the CCFLs range about the same. Plus some heat shrink a little solder to do the job right.
A guy could really hook the ride up with this stuff for cheap. Since I am not going to rebake the lights I think I am going to light up the engine compartment as it lacks proper illumination.

eL eS February 2nd, 2005, 05:41 PM has anyone fooled with EL Wire, electroluminescent wire.
kleetus February 2nd, 2005, 06:04 PM The LEDs don't last long enough? WHat kind of life span are we talking here? Most LEDs run well into the 100,000 hour category. Unless the manufacture is running the LED past its SOA, this shouldn't be a problem. I'm just a little surprised by this.
SurfjaxLS February 2nd, 2005, 06:04 PM I did its easy to work with, but buy high brightness wire or you will wont see them at all with lights on at anytime of day.
eL eS February 2nd, 2005, 06:13 PM I am not certain if I will use CCFL or EL Wire for the engine compartment. I am most concerned with illumination at night since that is when light is most needed and most effective.
I think I will by a a small kit and test both. The EL Wire brightness seems to be moderated by the voltage applied so i will look at a few different drivers since they are so cheap.
I was really expecting to see so jacked up prices when i started searching but the CCFLs seem cheap enough to use for just about anything as do the EL Wire lights.
PC-Moders have been using this stuff for a while. Seems about the time I stopped obsessing about computers this crap hit the scene. Figures!

Man shop the web. After reading about the invert fires I began to notice the prices on the bulbs, CCFLs, and the drivers, ac/dc inverter.
The 12v DC a PC puts in isn’t much different than the 12 you car supplies. So I started to search the web and came up with a load of sites that sell this stuff.
Jeez i was thinking it was elite hardware... I gotta get back on my game; this programming and DB development has atrophied my tek skillz.

This kit looks rather nice

The down fall to LED's is heat. When I was making the LED angel eyes I got so many complaints about them burning out so quickly. The problem is that the LED bulbs can't withstand the heat inside the headlight. LED's will last a long time but not under the extreme heat for this application.
The best Angel Eye kits were the Gen V DDE kits with the light boxes. Too bad you can't find those anymore. I have one original kit left that I used for my car. I had a fiber optic cable break and never could find a replacement or I'd have those in my car instead of the CCFL's. Here's a picture of the Gen 2 setup which is almost identical to the Gen V kit:
http://www.lskoncepts.com/prodimages/gen2kit.jpg
eL eS February 3rd, 2005, 07:37 AM were the fiber kits brighter than CCFL. It seems that the advantage the ccfls have is that you can use copper wire to make the connections, they ability to resist heat and cost. But they only have 15k to 20k hour MTBF so you could end up with a popeye angel eye config sooner.
GrayGhost1 February 3rd, 2005, 08:43 AM The Gen V DDE's were not as bright as the CCFL's but they were real close. The good thing about the Gen V's is that when the bulb burned out all you had to do was head down to Home Depot and get another one. It was very cheap to operate. The worse part about the Gen V kits were the light boxes. With the engine compartment crammed it was hard for folks to find a good spot to locate the bulky boxes.

always a trade off. In comparison to the ccfl I can see the benefit to the Gen V kits now. Yeah too bad those arent around. 15-20K hour MTBF is a bit to narrow for teh ccfl bulbs. but everything I read says they are very durable and only encounter any sort of start failure only when subjected to way way below 0 temperatures.
It seems like a toss up between the two.

Hey, Greyghost.
I will be ordering your CCFL headlights soon.
I could get the CCFL and do it but I figure I'll let professional do the job and done right. I have angel eye on my foglights instead of headlight (couldnt get the headlight to open, black instead of grey) .
I'll probably get rid of the angeleye for fog light once I get the CCFL for headlights. what do you think? too much if I have both? I'll have to post some pics to have some opinions.
back to your CCFL, which part are you referring to when you say it can be custom painted?

I guess it depends on what kind of look you're going for. It might be a tad much for the car but if you like it then go for it.

If you have a car that isn't black you can have the bezel painted to match. They look real good. Here's a picture of the painted bezel in the Vivid Red:

I haven't seen the angel eyes in the fog lights on the LS. Can you post some pics?
Beamer March 11th, 2005, 11:16 PM So if you chose not to have the bezel painted it would just be "stock" color?
And when you order, is the $369 or whatever the cost for both headlights or is it $369 or whatever a piece?
I got confused reading the post, do they have a good life span or do they blow out after like 2 months or something?
eL eS March 12th, 2005, 06:47 AM the MTBF for ccfl tubes is supposed to be around 15k hours IIRC but yu never can tell when I light will blow. When it does it will require full disassembly to replace. I would be all over this mod if it were not for this fact.
I look to my garage door opener lights for direction in this case. I have bought all sorts of bulbs that are supposed to be long life and safe for use in high vibration enviroments and one by one they all blow.
I may try to find some LED bulbs since it is not hot in the garage. The only angel/demon eye bulbs that were external to the headlight assy were the fiber optics and they are hard as hell to find now. See if he can get you a set of those. The light is transferd through a fiber optic cable to the ring so if the light blows you just replace the bulb.

The bezel is black originally so if you choose not to have the bezel painted then it is black. The price of $369 is for both headlights with the angel eyes installed. You can opt for the pre-wired option which you don't have to do any wiring. I use a stock wiring harness and pre-wire the angel eye lights to it so that when you turn on your parking lamps the angel eye rings come on.
The rings will last the life of your car. The only item that you may have to replace over time is the transformer and it's a simple change out.

No problem! I'm working 5 sets of angel eye headlights this weekend to get out before I head out on vacation. It looks like your car is the Medium Cypress Green. I did a set of angel eye headlights for a guy that had that color. His bezel was painted the same color and it looked real good. His car is on CarDoman. Let me find his car and I'll link you to it.

Quik LS March 21st, 2005, 09:13 PM What is a CCFL DIY kit for the LS?
There have been several 'angle eye' kits for the LS.
the first ones were similar to the BMWs, used a 'light box' and fiber optic rings - very bright but hard to install
the second generation seemed to be LED rings - the latest versions are ok bright but the LEDs tend to fail due to the heat of the headlights
the current generation uses Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lights - basically little fluorescent tubes - the are very bright and easier to install.
Here's a pic of mine:
