3.9 V8 engine interchange between years

I have a 2001 LS V8. I assume the oil pump went out. I was driving about 50mph when the engine just died. I have tried to turn the engine over by using a socket and breaker bar and it will not turn. now on to my question. I have read on this baord that 2000-2002 engine interchange and 2003-up engines will not work in my 2001. What is the major difference? Can i strip a 2003+ down to the long block and use it? the reason I ask is I just did a Catera swap using a 2004 CTS 3.2 and it turned out real well. Had to swap the oil pan and pickup, the intake, the flex plate and a few other small items.
I guess I'm hoping the Lincoln 3.9 is the same basic engine between years and will interchange by changing some of the bolt on parts.

You should be able to use anything that doesn't involve electronics, intake routing, or the VVT system. I don't know to what extent the VVT may have changed the block configuration.

The block might work, but that's about it. First gen doesn't have the electronics to run the VVT heads, or the TBW throttle body that the second gen motors have.

The 4.0 Jag engine I'll using in my '02 LS8 gives me some insight. VVT is entirely mechanical in actuation. There are sensors that tell the computer what's happening. I don't know what would happen if the VVT were to be installed and then just ignored.

SCT tells me they have the ability to upgrade the '02 computer to handle extra input such as VVT sensors.

The variable valve timing is computer controlled. The electronics open and close hydraulic valves to alter the valve timing. It is not "mechanically" controlled. If not connected (electronically) it would just stay at the default timing.
