2006 LINCOLN ZEPHYR: ENTHUSIAST

"The transmission really plays a key role in what we were able to accomplish. The wide ratio span gives us a great low gear ratio for strong launch performance, while access to six gears means the car always is able to select the right gear for top performance. The shifts are crisp and clean, and you're up to speed very quickly."– Bill Ickes, Zephyr Powertrain Integration Manager

The 2006 Lincoln Zephyr is quick off the line, delivers crisp acceleration and provides satisfying overall performance. And that is part of a tradition that began with the first Lincoln Zephyr, launched in 1936 with a V-12 engine.

POWERTRAIN: Capable and clean

The power behind today's Lincoln Zephyr performance comes from the 3.0-liter Duratec 30 V-6. This all-aluminum engine features dual overhead cams, four valves per cylinder, electronic throttle control and intake Variable Cam Timing (i-VCT). The i-VCT uses hydraulic pressure to advance or retard the intake cam timing up to 29 degrees. Output is 210 horsepower and 200 foot-pounds of torque. As responsible as it is powerful, this is the cleanest Duratec 30 ever. It will be rated for ULEV II tailpipe emissions in states that have adopted California's clean-air standards. In the rest of the country, it will bear a U.S. federal rating of Tier II, Bin 5 tailpipe and LEV II evaporative emissions.

The Duratec 30 is paired with an advanced six-speed automatic transaxle. Electronic controls coordinate the transmission's shifts and the engine's output to provide the front-drive Lincoln Zephyr with seamless gear changes. Gear ratios are ideally spaced over a wide span to deliver rewarding acceleration and good fuel economy.

Fluid-filled bushings with special internal chambers, called hydromounts, absorb vibration and act much like shock absorbers for the powertrain. The damping effect of the three hydromounts that support both the engine and the transmission also contributes to the feeling of a smooth idle and shifts.

HANDLING: More than its own

Because it is a Lincoln, it was imperative that Zephyr deliver a quiet, comfortable ride. Because it is a mid-size sedan targeted at those who value the pleasure of driving, the Lincoln Zephyr also is endowed with confident, responsive handling.

The Lincoln Zephyr features independent suspensions and 17-inch tires tuned for comfortable and precise handling.

"As soon as you sit in Zephyr – before you even start it – you know this is a Lincoln," says Kerry Baldori, Zephyr engineering manager. "The driving experience reinforces that. You have the feeling of confidence, comfort and sportiness in a balanced package that is fun to drive."

The fully independent suspension has been specifically tuned to emphasize precise and nimble response, as well as ride comfort.

Wide P225/50 17-inch tires are standard. Large four-wheel disc brakes reside behind the alloy wheels on which these are mounted. The braking system includes a 4-sensor, 4-channel anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake force distribution (EBD). Knowing Lincoln Zephyr buyers would be as concerned with how its brakes feel as they are with how well it stops, engineers went to unusual lengths to address this issue.

The steering was designed to work in harmony with the tires and suspension. The power rack-and-pinion steering system delivers higher boost at low road speeds, but, at higher speeds, it transmits reassuring feedback and linear increases in torque buildup.

The Lincoln Zephyr comes standard with a traction assist system that works by reducing engine torque as necessary when it senses impending wheel slip. Traction assist can be turned off manually if desired.

SOLID FOOTING: It begins with a firm foundation

Lincoln Zephyr is nimble and fleet of foot, thanks in no small part to its highly rigid body structure. The CD3 architecture on which the Lincoln Zephyr is based provides a strong foundation that allows the tires to maintain optimal contact with the road.

This structure allows the suspension to isolate occupants from undue road shocks – contributing to a more comfortable, quieter road experience – without isolating the driver from the feedback he or she needs.

And there is what many would consider an unexpected benefit. Thanks to a rigid and robust structure, the quiet interior is the perfect environment for the industry's first THX II-Certified® audio system. Optional on the Lincoln Zephyr, the system features superlative surround sound worthy of an upscale cinema. To ensure that driver and passengers always travel well – and with the right directions – a new DVD-based navigation system is available.

PERSONAL PROTECTION: Passive and active safety

A strong structure provides occupants of the Lincoln Zephyr an admirable level of protection. Zephyr's construction allows it to be quick and nimble to help a driver avoid an accident. Furthermore, Lincoln Zephyr's body is designed to provide impact protection in two ways: It can help absorb and help direct the energy of impacts away from occupants, and it can help shield occupants from intrusions.

The Lincoln Zephyr is based on the exceptionally rigid CD3 architecture.

Lincoln Zephyr incorporates a number of highly advanced safety technologies including Ford's Personal Safety System™. The Personal Safety System includes standard driver and front passenger air bags, seat-deployed side air bags for thorax protection, and three-point safety belts at all seating positions with front seat pretensioners and retractors. A full-length safety curtain for head protection provides an additional layer of side-impact safety.

Well - they say 5 new cars-

Could a Mark IX be in our future?

Well it better be and it better come with a lot of horses!!!

Lincoln needs to take a jump back to the top with a "real" Mark not a Truck - I don't think you find too many redneck Lincoln Drivers!!!

Just like the Caddies - Rednecks and Lux don't mix!!!

Redneck and Trucks well they like to block the main street of Boscobel and talk for 5 min or so backing up traffic!! Yes, a traffic jam in a 3000 pop town!!

Don't know bout you fellas...... But this thing looks like the next generation of the LS??
They shoulda just called it that, but I guess this is all part of FORD's re-invention. I say Re-Invention because of all the Throw Back stuff in designs (Mustang) and re-inventing the old names.

looking forward to getting one of these in. I work at a Lincoln dealership, it's Heaven here.

It'll be a little while before we get one in, though.
