Transmission Opinion

2001 Continental, 67,000 miles on it, and no history. I hear people on here say that the car is ultra reliable and that I should have no real issues. Also hear that the transmissions are junk. Do I change the fluid at 67000 not knowing the history, or do I leave it? Or do I drain a little and refill with a bottle of lucas? I am at a loss, don't want to do the wrong thing and kill my tranny. Thanks

Well the trans isn't as bad as everyone makes them out to be. With 67000 it should have been done twice already, at 30k and 60k. You might be able to do a carfax report to see where the car was bought from, call them and give them the vin for service info. IMO I would have it flushed and the filter changed if you had the money at the Lincoln/ford dealer. Should be 140 for a flush, 240ish for a flush and filter. then you won't need a flush till 97k. The trans may become junk if you over abuse it, don't do mantinence on it. If the car looks like it was taken care of, it probably was.

I'll start off by saying that I'm no expert but I have read extensively on this subject. In this case you should be fine, the miles are pretty low, and remember that these are granny cars when new so l doubt it was beaten on by the original driver. Go for the full flush and filter at the dealer and you should be fine. Especially if there are no problems now and the fluid is not burnt smelling or really low or some other indicator of mis-use and abuse.
