i caught mine just in time. It's horrible!!!! Contact jamie for a rust free southern tray. I wouldn't be so hard to make your own or fab up something though.

Mine is nearly gone. I thought about fabbing one out of stainless. If I do, I will post pics.

The original is a horible design... just asking for rust.

I was just going to say give us a group deal on it Max. Thanks for putting the water on it.

Here is another item worthy of a group buy.

I see kustomizingkid is taking a stab at it.

We'll let that play out and see what he comes up with. Otherwise, I have a friend who owns a fab company that can get it done.

Post here if interested in getting one so we can see the demand. Would like at least 10 guys to play.

The price should be a lot less than Ford price.

I will be building my prototype after work tomorrow, I think I might narrow it up a bit and move the canister a little closer together. I can't see a single good reason why they had them so far apart.

kustomizingkid
April 19th, 2008, 09:47 PM
Heres what I whipped up after work, its a little rough and I did it quick. I will clean them up if I build more of them.

April 20th, 2008, 12:51 AM
looks good but you better put some holes in it or its gonna get water in there and have no where to drain! i would also coat it with etching primer and then maybe a undercoating of some kind or a very durable outdoor paint for metal, maybe even patio furniture paint. looks great though!

wow i like! coming alone nicely. will you be offering any options with protective coating? I'm thinking powder coating (gray). Again nice job!

kustomizingkid
April 20th, 2008, 05:25 PM
That one is yours Chicken, it's a bit rough just as a fore warning.

I need to see how many of these people are interested in, if it is enough I'll do a few and maybe get them powder coated. It's really a matter of cost though, if people want to pay more I'll paint them or get them powder coated, if not I'll sell them in bare metal and they can paint there own.

I will be adding some drain holes on the rest of them, and will be leaving the corners unwelded to aid in draining.

kustomizingkid
April 21st, 2008, 12:32 AM
I'm trying to figure out how much to charge. If I make them out of 18 gauge, and make them clean with more drain holes it will take me 2 hours or so, and thats very generous shop time, the way I like to work on my personal time.

I'm thinking around $50 prolly.

Is anyone absolutely against getting these in bare metal and painting it themselves? I don't really want to paint them, and I'm sure not everyone wants the same color. I would prolly prime them though.

i wonder why the rot/rust so bad
i was just under my wifes 97 taurus (11 yrs old, 150k)doing some work and i saw that it has a tray very similar to the gen 2 marks ,i live in the northeast snow belt region and on the taurus the tray looks like its 1 or 2 years old, just has road dirt on it and no rust??

i have had to replace brake lines on this car because they rusted through from the outside in,yet this tray is like new.

wierd that the mark would use a different quality tray

April 28th, 2008, 09:03 PM
Hit some roadkill this weekend and took a nice chunk of rust out of mine, I'd be interested for sure.

I got a new one from my local Lincoln dealer a year ago the metal is pretty cheap, it was new but had rust starting in spots where the original coating had come off. I stripped and painted with Imron, let it cure for a month then waxed the crap of it. I also replaced all the rubber hoses, they were nasty.

Now that I think about it I prob should had it powder coated...rats...

May 15th, 2008, 09:40 PM
Perhaps a wire wheel on a drill motor and clean off whats left of your tray. Then silicone or pop rivet a flat sheet or strips of sheet metal to the cleaned areas of the tray as a temp fix, till the "kid" can make you a kick ass replacement.

If you need bent pieces of sheet metal, for the quick fix. A hammer and a bench vise can be used for some rudimentary bends for corners or edges.

I will actually have time to work on these this weekend. I have had one hurtle after another getting anything done, and my grandpa dieing didn't help any.

If I don't get a few done this weekend you can slaughter me.

manish
May 16th, 2008, 12:18 AM
first thing sorry about your family loss "kid". this definitely isn't more important than that, plus school trust me i know. I only bumped up the topic because i went to pull out my mark and large pieces of my tray was on the ground in my garage. Also i too thought about trying to salvage my tray but there is nothing left..lol so i'm just letting the car sit until kid can get around to making the trays or i find one in decent condition at a junkyard. I'm just still trying to understand how ford could have used such inferior material for these trays and yet the trays on other ford vehicles are way better quality. anyway thanks for the advice on the metal strips though...i just wish i had enough of my tray to work with. well at least the weather has been jacked for the last week and it won't get any better this week or next so the extra down time is cool.

I have one that is half done, shouldn't take me more than 20 minutes to finish it up, and I will try and get a few mroe done.

School is just nuts, ap calc is no fun at all!
