Mark VIII Electric Fan

The Jeep Forum I belong to, I see a lot of guys putting Mark VIII electric fans into their rigs. Seems to be one of the easiest mods people are doing.

This is a quote from a guy's build thread. He is putting an LS1 in his CJ-5 and it's coming along great. This is a quote from his build thread...

"Going back tomorrow to finish. Or at least, finish what we can. Going to try to mount the fuel pump, mount the coil packs (PITFA), install extended brake lines (PITFA), and the big project, making the radiator / e-fan fit! I'm positive there's enough room between the grille and water pump, but mounting it all will definitely prove to be one hell of a challenge. The fan is from a Lincoln Mark VIII, supposedly pushes the most CFM of any factory produced e-fan. It's about an inch wider than the fins of the radiator, and the perfect height for the radiator. Going to do some cutting / pull a monkey out of my *** to make it work."

Is the part about it producing the most CFM of any factory electric fan true? Why would a Mark VIII need all that air?

True, needs it because of limited space, and it cycles as well.

LOL I always thought because the DOHC gets crazy hot!

The Mark VIII's have a tight engine compartment, and I always figured they had overheating problems so they put an oversized fan on it.

No. The Viper fan pulls more air. The VIII fan moves over 4000CFM, though, which is huge in most situations. It is more than just a Jeep thing, though. The Mustang guys are ll over it too...and even a Mark VII or two. ;)

I think I might have to throw one in. Doing +/- 5mph on trails doesn't cool your engine too much and the Jeep has a hyrdraulic fan so an electric would be nice. I hope the VIII fan isn't overkill haha.

No, not overkill. You just need to be sure you use a controller up to the task. I am happy with the Flex-A-Lite 33054 I am using. Your charging system needs to be able to keep up, too.

Yeah a lot of people use flexalite. Some say the stock fan does the trick but I noticed that the engine starts running a little hot since I have a trans cooler on the front of the radiator and a big winch on the front bumper blocking half of the grille opening. I want electric so I can manually switch it on and off too. Charging systems on the Jeeps are awesome. I'm running an Optima Yellowtop right now since it deep cycles great with the winch. I'll see....it all comes down to $$
