Granted, I was trying to see how good I could get and set the cruise control for 60 MPH and never changed. My commute is 99% freeway and I was driving at 0400 in the morning and no one was on the road to slow me down or make me feel like I needed to speed up.
AquaLS01 December 26th, 2004, 07:57 PM 500 mile trip. 2001 LS8 Sport mainly cruised at 70-80 with lane changes sometimes hitting 100. Average 22.7 mpg. The LS really shines on a trip at those speeds.
lsbit December 26th, 2004, 09:56 PM I have driven about 1300 miles so far and my message center says 18.8. That isn't bad for the v8 as I live in the most congested part of town and during the Christmas shopping season (the whole time I have owned the car) you usually drive about 10 mph on the highway. This is not an exaggeration.
Fordman December 27th, 2004, 07:57 AM Its hard to get good mileage, I live in Tampa too much traffic.
City= 15-17
Hwy= 24-26
26 Is the best I ever got grannying the car around 65 MPH, but that didn't last long. I look at it this way, if I really love a car I don't really care what I get.

You right foot is what is wrong! If you are like me you like to hit the go pedal to hard too often. I am lucky to stay in the 17 average range....

aint it the truth... When will I learn moderation. My MPG is in the gutter. I drive a lot of hwy miles in the 90+ range. Not braggin just being honest.
Dutch February 17th, 2005, 09:57 PM I get 20 mpg in my regular commuting cycle, which is about evenly mixed highway/sitting in traffic/city streets.
Cruising on the highway, I get about 23 mpg if I go 85; if I granny it and go 75 (the speed limit here) I can get 25 mpg.
This is all based on actual fuel consumption, not the overly optimistic computer.
BTW this fuel economy distrubs me because my Chrysler weighs probably 500 pounds more than the Lincoln, plus it has a carbureted big block and it can get 23 on the highway at 70-75.

So how far have we come with all of thiese over engineered automobiles... Is that your concern... mine too if those are the facts.
lsbit February 17th, 2005, 11:21 PM My wife has my LS that I was getting fairly good mpg with. With her driving, she barely gets 16! Always gas and brake with her. Even though we are going down-hill and there is a red light in front of her, she doesn't let off that gas! What can you do...

Its all about how you drive, and the type of gas, Yesterday I averaged 19 MPG on my normal 90+ mph commute home..
This morning I avereged 23mpg averaging about 95+ mph
My commute is 70 miles.

BBoyd February 19th, 2005, 01:50 AM I think i have the worst mileage of all on the thread. 2000 ls v8 sport pkg, kkm intake recently installed. 11.3 city, (yea 11.3) and barely 19 hwy (80 mph on criuse). before the intake i was getting 16.5 city, has this happened to anyone else? my right foot is not that heavy (usually), but i usually only travel from home to school (5min in atlanta). any suggestions as to why my mileage is so low?

If you're sure your air and fuel filters are in good shape, and plugs are good, and check engine light isn't on, and the car runs okay, I'd try replacing the front two oxygen sensors. They become inaccurate with age, and will generally cost you mileage and power above 80k or so miles.
That's not cheap, but it may make a really big difference.
Dutch February 19th, 2005, 02:00 AM So how far have we come with all of thiese over engineered automobiles... Is that your concern... mine too if those are the facts.
Yes, exactly. Although new cars do get much better city gas mileage - my Chrysler only gets 13 around town.
What I think it really proves is that you can't get around the laws of physics. On the highway, it will always take roughly X amount of gas to move Y pounds of car at Z miles per hour.

Derek - I was about to freak out on your mpg - but please post pics of your 50 person in-car jacuzzi :Beer [/in Jack's crazy party voice]
btw: I go to Coventry twice a year - how close is Somerset?
No 50 person Jacuzzi, just a full size carburated V8 that thrives on gas :)
Coventry is just about 2 hours (130 miles) from my home town of Burnham-On-Sea, straight up the M5, skirt Birmingham on the M42 and I will be there. If you want to meet up I am sure something can be arranged.

HizHonor February 21st, 2005, 06:54 AM I'm squeezing 17.8 mpg in the city and 24.6 mpg highway with a 21.2 mpg avg. 158K on the clock, new TPS, EVR, EGR, DPFE; EGR channel and throttle body/elbow cleaning, new plugs and wires. This old '92 just runs great on Exxon 89. :p
ERIC1 February 21st, 2005, 08:25 AM sorry gents but i gotta say this. about the mileage Who Really Gives A Sh1t. people drive lincoln Why? number 1 answer is BECAUSE I CAN. and why do you have the big v8 motor again numbe 1 answer BECAUSE I CAN. all of our mileages are within 3-4 miles of each other and 3-4 miles dont equate to too much anyway.maybe 40 miles by the time you are on E and who runs down to E anyway.

You want to get the best mileage possible, because mileage is the best indicator of the condition of your engine and fuel system. If you have a problem, that's where it will show up first.
And if you think we have "big v8" engines in our cars, I think you are one funny guy! Well, I guess it is 9 cubic inches bigger than a V6 Mustang...
LuxurySport00 February 23rd, 2005, 08:27 PM i was getting pretty good MPG up until two days ago now it's at 12.2mpg in the city. something is a miss, i'm going to try the tires tomorrow then i'll move to the O2 sensor.. what else should i look at?
eL eS February 24th, 2005, 06:57 AM mine is int the pitts as well. I have already replace the IAC and EGR. The front O2's will be swapped out this weekend and I plan on replacing all the plugs and the 3 coils on the RH side of my V6.
They havent tested bad or thrwon any codes but I have to remove a bunch of intake manifold and throttle assy in order to change the plugs beneth them and figure I should save myself sometime and replace them ahead of any failure. They have 109k miles on them now so I think I got my money out of those parts. My MPG is about 11 to 13 Hwy I average 80mph.
lsbit February 24th, 2005, 10:30 PM My MPG is about 11 to 13 Hwy I average 80mph.
Wow...too bad there isn't room for a big block in there. You should get better mileage with a 460. :steering
hottweelz February 25th, 2005, 07:12 AM I remember about ten years ago, my friend built a gorgeous Chevy 400 and put it in his malibu is was easily 400 horse and he got 20 hiway out of it! Back then we were like "Wow, how did u pull that off?"
kleetus February 25th, 2005, 03:32 PM Simple... He wasn't emmisionally challenged...
My 351 in my Capri gets 26 on the highway at 65 or 70 MPH. No emmissions crap. Carter AFB, 3.08 gears and 5 speed.

Whoa...Everytime I think of good gas mileage I think of my friend's Capri. He put a 302 in there back in the 80's and used an Edelbrock carb (same thing as the afb anyway) and got close to 30 on the highway. We were shocked. Part of it is the strain factor. I got better gas mileage with my Ranger after I put the 302 in it. It originally had a 4 cylinder. The 302 never had to really work to move the vehicle around. That 4 banger had to work it's little butt off!
Your Capri isn't a '80 RS that is white with the red stripes too, is it?
thamarkman February 26th, 2005, 12:45 AM In my 80' Mark VI I get between 10-13mpg with my 351W, I've got a 600cfm carb, Gt40P heads, headers, and a beefier cam. And my foot is often planted to the floor.

No, it's an 81 Black Magic. It's not pretty, and if I ever move south, I'm redoing the entire car. It needs paint in a big way. Way faded... That's what makes it so much fun... nobody takes me seriously until it's too late!

My mileage comp tells me I'm either getting 1.9 mph or 60 mph - it just depends on her mood. I average it out to 10 miles per dollar.
BBoyd June 7th, 2005, 10:36 PM Depends where I am. When im in the Atl I get 13, barely. When I'm in Augusta (a lot less traffic) I get ~18.6 My best hwy was like 19.2, but that was only after about 2 hrs of 80mph cruise on I-20
Nick Campagna June 15th, 2005, 06:35 AM I have a stock 76 Eldorado convertable. All orig, except for a new roller timing chain, 4 deg advanced. 16.2 at 72 mph, 15+ around town.(lots of hills) Not bad for 5400 lbs, and 140,000 miles.
Quinton June 15th, 2005, 07:18 AM I read through the 1st 2 pages and didn't see anything about a V6. Can anyone tell me what they are getting with their V6 LS. I just got it detailed so the slick @ss sheet metal should help out. LOL
On some vehicles the smaller engines get better mpg but on some they get worse because the engine has to work so hard just to push it through the wind.
How is it, in general, with our LS's?
horfls June 15th, 2005, 07:33 AM i get about 25-27mpg at 73mph with 87octaine in my 2001 v8 ls i get about 16-18mpg at 75mph when i run 91octaine
Oxyargon03 June 15th, 2005, 10:01 AM I just recently went on a trip to lake erie with some of my friends. AC on the whole way. It was around 200 miles highway for the most part. i got 18.2
When i first bought my car i was curious as to the mpg and left the ac off for the trip home. I had to about 4 1/2-5 hours don't really remember but it said 22.1
raylisiak June 15th, 2005, 10:50 AM 23 MPG LS V8 @ 80MPH constant. The Dynomax free flowing exhaust really does help with gas mileage.
Hetrodyne June 16th, 2005, 09:03 PM '05 LS V6 w/2200 miles getting 22-23 around town. no road trips yet.
My weekend beater is a 99 C5 Corvette that is still basically stock except for a CAI, gets me 33 on the highway at 75-80 with the air conditioning on. On a recent trip to El Paso I let it run on cruise control at 120 mph for a while and was getting 28 mpg. Average mpg is 24.

What kind of mpg are you V6'ers getting?
buddyleee5 June 5th, 2006, 01:31 PM i drive about 30 miles a day 20 of them highway and i get 19-21 mpg. At first i was using 91-93 but with hihg gas prices i used 89 and havnet noticed a difference. Its a 2003 v6 with no mods to the engine.
Idk why my mileage is so bad. Do you guys have any suggestions to what i can do? I was thinking air filter, does that help?

n8bachelor June 5th, 2006, 05:28 PM 2004 LS V6 with 39,000mi
I just took a weekend road trip into Missouri of about 1300 miles and averaged nearly 26 mpg for the entire trip. 85% was interstate (75mph) and 10% highway (50-60 mph except for that one 50 mile streach in BFE where I was pushing 80+) the other 5% was back roads (gravel). This was over the holiday weekend so there was some traffic to contend with as well.

I drove my LS 2000 miles round trip and I thought it was comfortable. I could have taken daddy's LS430, but it wouldnt have been the same. I always have the windows down and screw seat warmers and crap. I'm one of those guys that are not afraid of heat. The only time I use the A/C is when I'm just not in the mood to listen to the wind.
Quinton June 5th, 2006, 08:55 PM Why do you suppose our city mpg sucks so bad? Does it have to do with our cars being more geared for top end? I'm content with the mpg I'm seeing of the hiway driving. Would it make sense to hammer it to get it up to 60mph as quick as possible and then cruise at 60? lol
GWL June 5th, 2006, 09:18 PM Just returned from a 2300 mi. round trip. Averaged 71 mph on the second half on the way home, including gas and restaurant stops.Total time 15.5 hours for just over 1100 miles. My fuel mileage varied from tank to tank by as much as 4 miles per Gal. Overall, 24.6 MPG on the second leg. I really think that fuel formulas are changing. I averaged almost 26 MPG on the same trip last year and had no great fluctuations from tank to tank. On one tank I only got 22 MPG. Highest tanks got 26 MPG.
