Radar Detector Check-in

PatrickSimmons

Who all here has a radar detector and how accurate is yours?

Have you still gotten tickets?

Has it saved you at all from a ticket?

I was just wondering which brands and models people where going with eventhough we would never go above the speed limit :shifty:

No detector. I use other people's while it's still in their car. Pretty accurate.
Yes.

I have both the V1 and had Passport 8500x50.

I liked the x50 better due to less false alerts, but can not live w/o the arrows on the V1 now.

Get the V1!!! you still have to be cautious as a lot of cops sit around with their radars off and shoot instant on.

V1 for about 10 years now. (This LSE, previous LS, and in BMW before the LS's) Never gotten a radar or laser ticket since I've had it. Did get paced once. And no the arrows are not a gimmick. I have a Whistler (given to me for free) in the other car and the lack of arrows is somewhat annoying.

Who all here has a radar detector and how accurate is yours? I have the Valentine 1 and love it. Very accurate.

Have you still gotten tickets? Since owning the V1, it has paid for itself about a hundred times over.

Has it saved you at all from a ticket? Absolutely!

Now, I know Bel makes a comparable radar detector but without the directional arrows. So, I can't compare the two but I can't see myself owning another radar detector that didn't have the directional arrows.

It almost seems hands down that the V1 is the best to go with. I just ordered mine but was told I was stupid for paying that much for something that didn't work 100% but I have heard differently from almost everyone that has owned one.

you wont regret it, but you cant go nuts either.

For a few bucks more get the concealed display, you will love it!!

Mine is mounted in the middle of the dash.

Its saved me countless number of times. I've only gotten one ticket in three years and after a while you begin to know when a false alert is going to go off, especially if you drive the same route often. It does suck when they sit there with the radar off around a corner, keeping traffic in front of you does help for that.

Sorry to be a thread whore, but those of you with the concealed display, how and where did you mount the actual detector at? Just curious.

Its my gfs but i drive more so for now im just leaving it in the LS. i want to get a valentine 1 and wire it in the mirror etc but for now the passport works fine. I have never gotten a ticket and it has saved me many many times.

No idea what mine is called but it was some cheap one from radio shack. It has saved me a number of times(heading down to FL on 95 in the middle of the night)...a couple of those would have been big tickets too . I have yet to be pulled over for speeding even though I speed a good amount.

I just bought a escort 8500 x50 a couple months back. saved me twice so far.

Put mine at the top of the A pillar.
Cop's don't see it even if they stick their heads in your car.
No tickets since I got it and saved me lots of times.
I'd also recommend a Blinder M25 laser jammer which has also
saved me lots of times.
Amusing to see the befuddled look on troopers faces when their
laser gun doesn't give a reading until I slow down and turn the jammer off.
Priceless!

The V1 and the M25 can be wired from the rear view switched mirror wire that powers the compass and dim feature.

I'm looking into getting one...but I've never had any speeding tickets. Almost got a ticket for powersliding in front of a cop into a street but eh, the radar wouldn't help that.

Even a cheap 50.00-100.00 radio shack radar detector will provide adequate protection, though not as good as the V1 and Passport.
If you can't afford an expensive one the cheepos will still help save your ass.

for those ofyou that have the radar mounted up high like that, i put my v1 up there a while back and it drastically decreased the pickup range. i guess from the solar strip on the windshield? you guys notice that and live with it, or find a way around?

I have a beltronics 995, I believe it to be very accurate, no tickets with it and I believe it has saved me a couple of times. not a bad unit at all.

It absolutely has saved my butt, many times.
Have not been caught with it on.

I saw no drop in range mounting the V1 high.
It sees around corners and over hills no problem.
At a typical 1000 ft distance from cop it's only a foot higher than if it was in the center of the windshield which makes no difference at all.

Ditto Cobra XRS 777

Lots of Interstate 95 trips no tickets yet! Cant use locally in VA they are illegal...

I have the concealed display that 02V8Sport has, but mine is mounted in the upper left corner of the windshield, right where 04SCTLS has his actual V1 mounted. 3m double faced tape on the backside of the concealed display allows me to attach it to the uppermost corner of the windshield, with the actual arrows/display facing in a more downward manner towards my line of vision vs the slightly upward manner of the V1 itself shown in the pics above.

My actual V1 is mounted via velcro on my rear deck, slightly ahead of and to the side of my 3rd brake light cover. The V1 controls face the trunk, the V1 antenna faces forward aimed directly out the windshield with a clear path between the front seats. I drilled a small hole into the deck, under the V1, to allow the RJ-11 cord to go down into the trunk, under the rear seat, and along the drivers side door channel/under the sill plates. The RJ11 then connects to the Valentine power connection underneath the drivers kick panel, where I found a constant hot somewhere under there. (The hot goes out after about 5 minutes of key removal though) I mounted a power button for the V1 in the blank space just below the fuel filler door/trunk release button.

To top it all off, I purchased a spare 3rd brake light cover and have it sitting on top of the V1, open end facing forward, closed end facing the trunk. With my tinted windows, you cant see a thing. From inside the car, anyone looking at the rear deck has no clue whats there. With the 3 plastic seatbelt anchor covers on the deck, along with the factory 3rd brake light/cover, the additional OEM cover fits right in.

Yes, my radar and even laser coverage(laser goes off every time Im at a light behind a modern SUV with that LED 3rd brake light) is fine. Radar penetrates the plastic 3rd brake light cover, so yes, I have plenty of side and rear radar coverage. No REAR laser coverage, but I've never heard of a cop shooting radar at your backsside.

So it's in effect, a very stealth but easy install. The stealth is good for anti theft purposes and when I cross the Potomac over into the lovely Commonwealth of VA. The only state in the US were detectors are illegal for cars.

Unfortunately no pics, and left my digital camera in a DC cab a month or so ago, so thats a done deal. lol.

I'll try to take some relatively decent cameraphone pics later outside in the light (in the parking garage now) and post. I had this same setup in the old (2000) LS as well, and worked fine. It really is great just hopping in, hitting the button, and its ON. Hopping back out, and nothing of value visible inside.

In the DC area, thieves were (are) breaking into cars at the subway parking lots whenever they saw just suction cups, or even suction cup marks on the windshield! They figured GPS or something was taken off the windshield, and tucked under the seat. And most of the time (per police), they were correct.

No REAR laser coverage, but I've never heard of a cop shooting radar at your backside.

They do in Delaware. That way they can target cars from other states that do not require a front plate.

Gotcha. Well, laser is a pretty done deal anyways. By the time any detector detects it.....your toast.

My laser jammer has saved me many times.
I've taken 2 seconds to react and slow down and turn it off
and they don't get a time on me.

I use a Sensoro Silver Bullet. Works good, not to many false readings. Saved me from tickets? Oh yes. I do speed a lot.

I have A Valentine 1 with remote on the right side of the dash. I have V-6 so I don't have the message display. The actual unit is mounted right next to the mirror up high just under the solat tint. You willnot even notice that I have one unless you look real hard by the mirror and you will see a small box. And I have it wired up to turn on and off when I turn the Ignition on and off.

As for the hiden desplay on sale on ebay, just buy it direct from Valentine for the same price.
