Ok I replaced the pcv hose a few weeks ago while I was doing that I replaced the plugs and on two of them I saw some oil on the plugs and in the wells. the other day I was driving and it started to jerk really hard when shifting the next day it ran fine it seems to come and go I thought it might be a tranny issue but I was reading around and it seems to be more of a miss issue. I know I need to replace the valve cover gaskets but would I get oil on the plugs from the gasket or am I look at a piston ring problem

check the clips on the harness that connects to the coil, that's what was causing my misfire

how many miles on your car? the coils are most likely just dying one by one as usual.

The coils don't "just die" one by one unless you have a serious amount of miles.
Its most likely the coils were you noticed the oil. The valve cover gasket leaks and the oil ruins the coils. In some cases if it goes on for to long you might need to replace all coils but more than enough people get away with the just the damaged ones.

I'm not sure with the V6 but with my V8 in the end I had to have them all replaced but the dealer left me hanging for a long time till they could figure out what it was and I'm sure that is why.

i over read that you notice oil in in the plug wells. in this case you will need the valve cover gasket kit for which ever side you noticed oil. there are 2 vcg kits one for each side.

when my car was misfiring there was not the slightest drip of oil or water where it shouldn't be. my coils slowly died one by one, i replaced one ran fine for a month then another coil failed and thats when i realized that the can fail one by one.

How long did you own it before the problem eastcoast?

I'm wondering if they had replaced the bad coil(s) before you bought it and neglected the rest. I will stand by this, if 1 or 2 go and you run it for a bit before replacing them they will all start to then go 1 by 1.

yeah the previuos owner had replaced 1 coil. i got complete history on the car and that is what it says aswell. so then after i owned it for 3 months i would notice a subtle miss while waiting at a stop light, and then eventually it moved to misfires under light acceleration, and then completely failed coil. that situation same sequence started another month or so after i had one rpelaced. but now im sure i'm running on all 8 cylinders. sorry about the hi jack.

the fact you say it only does it during shifts throws me off, but if thats what the code says its most likely atleast one of the coil packs.

the theory is that the valve cover gasket with time begins to allow oil to seep into places it shouldn't be such as the plug wells and or all over the coil packs. if your pockets right, the best idea is to replace the valve cover gasket kit, all 8 coils and all 8 plugs. 65k is a lot of miles for these poorly designed ignition coils and valve cover gaskets. my bet is they are due for replacement. also if you have bad VCG's usually oil will leak out onto the manifold and you will be able to smell oil and sometimes see a light puff of smoke. this can ruin the manifold.
