KD00LS October 1st, 2007, 06:26 PM How's it goin there fellas? Alright here's the rundown. I just bought a Belkin N1 wireless router, shown here with details http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=273526 , and just like before when I had my 802.11b wireless routers, my internet seems to cut out if it gets too overloaded. The system is supposed to support up to 16 computers, and so far I have a desktop wired, laptop wireless, and xbox 360 wireless. When I run all three of these at the same time, as in just connected, the internet cuts out and I have to reset the modem. Happens almost every time. Could this be a sign of a bad cable modem?

KD00LS October 1st, 2007, 07:04 PM Some more information...
I'm currently connected from modem to desktop, using a new ethernet cable wire they gave me with the router kit. When I had the router connected, I was using older cable for input and output. The new cable seems to be thicker at the heads and I'm guessing it's the most up to date cable.
Some numbers, no idea what they mean

The modem is about 5 years old, and it keeps cutting out with a wireless router. More often with the N series than the B. The problem isn't the wireless signal, it's that the internet completely cuts off, even from the WIRED desktop that runs through the router. I'm wired completely now from the modem right to the computer and I haven't had a problem yet.

Well hook a ton of :q:q:q:q up and start downloading and see if your modem turns off or not
KD00LS October 1st, 2007, 07:11 PM I did, I had the laptop, desktop, and xbox live all hooked up. As soon as I did, the signal cut out less than a minute later even though the signal strength was 54mbps at my laptop.

Just had a friend with the same issue. Had her go get the Linksys Wireless N for 100 and she has no issues what so ever.

She bought a Belkin too or just the signal loss?

i know the signal cuts out, you've said that, i wanna know what happens to the modem
its either the modem or the router, you gotta know which to replace....
KD00LS October 1st, 2007, 07:41 PM Well the all of the modems lights stay on, and I believe the signal one as well. I JUST bought the router today and installed it. I had to reset it often with the old router too.
KD00LS October 1st, 2007, 07:45 PM And having the modem directly attached to the desktop has yet to have cut out at all.
StincolnLincoln October 1st, 2007, 08:23 PM yeah she brought a belkin wireless router thats what kept shooting down the signals the belkin wasnt strong enough to hold the wireless signal so it kept booting her PS3 , laptops and desktop. I took her to get the linksys wirless N for 100bucks and she has had no problems for a few days now and still going strong plus linksys is more user friendly.

Oh well I got the N1 with like 300mbps and it's definately strong enough, I just don't think my modem can handle it since it's like 5-6 years old. And like I said my old Linksys B would disconnect off of just my laptop sometimes and I've have to restart the modem, I think due to the modem.
StincolnLincoln October 1st, 2007, 08:42 PM i noticed that with the Linksys B as well since all the signals have changed and the ranges ask for more current from the router itself the B couldnt keep up so i upgraded to the G with CiscoSystems attached but as far as your belkin go ahead give the Linksys N a try u wont regret it.
KD00LS October 1st, 2007, 08:56 PM I think I need to replace the modem first and see if that clears up the issue, right now I'm on my laptop and it seems to be working very well, without the xbox on though.
eastcoastLS October 1st, 2007, 09:34 PM maybe some ports on your router are not open thats why when you overload it, it stops working.

Well two of the ports are wireless...only one is connected. How do you open ports?
MDavis0424 October 1st, 2007, 11:15 PM Did you try going to the Belkin site and downloading the latest firmware update for the router? Since the internet connection is stable when wired to one PC and the connection only drops when you run everything through the router, I would suspect the router as the problem.

It's updated with the latest firmware, I actually just had to restart today when it was wired to the computer. I'm guessing it's the modem right? Does anyone know if those numbers look ok that I posted?
KD00LS October 2nd, 2007, 05:54 PM Nailed it, bad modem. Thanks guys
