I purchased a used 1998 transmission with 47,000mi on it and installed it today. It appeared to be in great shape - no doubt that the mileage quoted was nearly spot-on. However, when I dropped the pan to change the fluid, I found an unidentified floating object, lol. Whatever it is, it looks to be in great shape and doesn't appear to be broken. I looked all over the bottom of the tranny and didn't see anywhere it could have gone. I finally got fed up and put the tranny back together, drove the car, and shifts seem to be good, I don't really notice any problems. I would like to get this put back though ... does anyone know what this is, what it does, and where it goes?

Your tranny was a virgin! :D
It's the dipstick plug used in assembly at the factory. When the dipstick is installed, the plug is pushed into the tranny pan and left there. Harmless.

It's a plug used to plug the dipstick tube hole before the car was assembled.
It ends up in the transmission pan when the trans is filled with fluid.
It's nothing to worry about.
Throw it away or sell to someone that wants all the "original" parts.:D

Awesome, thanks a lot to those who responded - you guys are awesome! At first I was fairly worried, but then when it shifted flawlessly under WOT I thought, "well, it couldn't be too important *hopefully*." It's a relief knowing that a.) it wasn't anything shredding itself and b.) further confirmation that the transmission was indeed advertised with the correct mileage. Looks like many more miles to come!
