I just had my transmission rebuilt last month on my 01 LS V8 $1700. Yesterday I get sputtering and a knock which just got louder as I drove. took the car to the mechanic and was told I had to replace the engine. $4500, I was told. SON OF A !@#!#.

I see engines for sale all the time on ebay for between 1000 and 2000 dollars. Start drawing and labeling and do it yourself.

Replace the engine over a knock? Probably a bad rod bearing. Usually those can be replaced pretty easily by just removing the oil pan. As long as it didnt damage the crankshaft then its probably safe to just replace the bearing and keep drivin.
Id deffinatly take it to a different mechanic and get a second opinion.

I wanted to know, too - I'm getting high into miles now.

According to this thread 147k.
http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/showthread.php?t=30131

$4,500 and you get a lower mileage engine, but you still have 147k miles on the body.

Good luck with your decision on repairing it, selling it, or junking it. You might want to try and part it out before you junk it though.

6 weeks after I got the suspension and wheels replaced on my wife's 155k miles Escort, the engine threw a rod. We had to junk it, but now she's got a Corolla hopefully that will last longer.

If you do get it fixed, you're just paying an extra ~$100 for the next 4 years for a younger running LS. I'm fighting with the decision of trading my LS now for a similar type vehicle with much less miles. (Before any major work needs to be done.)

It just seems like this car is treating me like a real B****! Something is always going wrong. The car has 149K miles so it does have an excuse. I just don't get it, I maintain it very well, the body and interior is in great condition and when it is running well I love driving it. Now that it has a new tranny I feel obligated to put in a new engine or at least a used one. Would anyone not recommend throwing in a low milege used engine?

Damn I have 210,000 on my 93 Mark VIII and she runs like a champ...
150,000 on my 94 and 95 and I think they are just getting broke in...

So what is high miles on a car that can run forever if one take good care of it? Does it matter how many miles are on the body if it's in good shape and you like the style?

Even at $4000 that a lot cheaper for a new car than $30,000 to $40,000.

If the body on my 95 last and I'm able to keep her away from the Winter Salt... I a new engine would make be happy when that time comes... I could just see her with a 05 mustang engine in her... Then a new tranny to go along with it.. mmmmm I like the sound if it.... But I still have a few 100K left before that happens. (At least I hope).

149k is very early for even a decently maintained engine to go. Must be a defect..albeit one that's well out of any warranty.

If the rest is in great shape, I wouldnt hesitate to get a replacement used engine in there.
