I was wondering if anyone had any reccomendations for cold air intakes on my 02 ls. If you do, where is the best spot to buy them. Any help is greatly appreciated.

KKM intake from Ken at LSKoncepts. I am assuming you have a V8? I have one on my LSE and noticed a difference as soon as I put it on. If you have the extra cash I suggest the intake tube as well.

LS koncepts has some. Youll need the addapter, I recomend haveing a different addapter made that is a bit longer. I dont know about anyone else some say they didnt have this problem but I couldnt fit to many filters on it. As far as filters go I would recomend the blitz filter with the heat shield around it. I use one and it works great, IMO its better than the K&N filters and if you are into the sound like some it sounds like a monster.

Eliot.. Can you take a picture of you filter w/ heat shield an post it? I've been working on a fab'd one.. but if there is one that fits the LS perfectly.. I'd rather buy one that make one.

This is the best I can do so far I dont have a camera, youll have to order by size instead of cars make and model, of course they dont have one specificly for our car. APC makes a generic one as well that is not adjustable like the Blitz.

ok, I thought that the heat shield actually blocked off the filter from the engine blowing hot air on the back of the filter. like some K&N i've seen.

This looks like it only lets air in from the Front end of the filter. which still would be hot air being blown on it from the engine fan. and being the "vent" from which the cold air would come in from the bottom, and there is nothing pushing the cold air in, I still think that it's still the hot engine air that your suckin in overpowering the colder air. And that this design isn't as advantagous as one might think. But that's my opinion.

Your wrong, altho it might block any forced air it sucks in the cold air and does not allow the ambient temps. IMO I noticed a big difference between it and the regular cone's especilay the K&N, but I do have a 2000 so there is no K&N shields that arent just fabed up that I know of. I know it looks restrictive but its realy not trust me it works great.

Blitz is a very trusted performance Company and I doubt they would fail with this product.

I don't doubt Blitz. It just seems like the shield fits close the the filter.

I like the filter but It will still pull hot air in no matter what b/c the air is still under the hood.IMHO the only way you can get "COLD AIR" is if the filter is in the fender or what ever and sealed away from the engine compartment.

Ok guys, you see your doing 60 down the highway what happens? The air gets forced into the engine compartment then pushing hot air out. This filter protects from heat while it is sucking in cold air passing by the hole.

Here is an idea I did not mention, get an extension for the intake tube that will alow this filter to extend a bit curving down closer to the bumper grille.

Pluss, this is besides the point but It helps the looks of the engine bay when polished.:D

But seriously guys it works better than the designes we are limited to at this time.

you don't need a dyno.. just some thermocouples put in some locations...

SOmeone's here done it, but it was on a heat shield panel that closed off the filter cabin. I remember saying that w/ this cone set up, he said the temp difference was only ~10-15 deg dif w/ and w/out the cone.. Unlike the panel which should a HUGE difference.

But either way.. any amount colder is better than nothing at all.

This has been discussed in great detail before. It is the chicken or egg deal. For it to be a TRUE cold air intake the air filter needs to be outside the engine bay. The better word for it is an induction kit. The open filters will definitely move more air but the air temperature is the key. While cruising at a constant speed you won't notice much difference since the air will be moving through every oriface. However, what you will notice is a car sitting in 90 degree heat and pulling in very warm air. You'll lose some low end torque but as you continue to move power will increase.

Don't get too caught up in what is a cold air intake and what isn't. Do a search for cold air intake and you'll see quite a bit of discussion about it.

The LSK Aluminum intake with KKM works very well. A heat shield will likely help but it does work fine without as the LS breathes well under the hood.

I have a non-contact laser thermoneter I use to measure the temps of my before/after intercooler install and my tires on race days. We did use this on the standard intakes

baffling off the cone from the engine does make a difference - especially when you are sitting at the start/lights - the cone sucks in all the hot air that is building under the hood.

once you are moving - the difference is much less.

Agreed with Quik, I run the XCAL2 diagnostic software when running my car and the intake temps do go up when standing still even with my true CAI system which pulls air from the front bumper.

With the filter in the engine bay it still sucks hot air no matter how fast the car is moving. The hot air under the hood doesnt circulate too well unless the heat can escape upward through a vent somewhere.

Id say give ken some support at LS koncepts but if you want to go with the Blitz filter I would have a adapter made that is a bit longer.

imho - the more filter area exposed the better - so the largest filter you can get (and still fits in the location and on the intake) is the best one.

as far as brand - they are all made of the same materials the same way.

When you order a filter - you order it by size - length, cone width, inlet size, ...etc

If Ken has a package that works, fits, and other people are happy - then thats 90% of the battle.

Check out ebay for a K&N cone airfilter, I just got me one yesterday. It cost me 40 bucks plus another 20 for shipping. It also came with an adaptor, i've had K&N before and it worked really well. If you are on a budget then this is definatley the way to go.

The KKM induction kit filters give the maximum amount of filter since the top of the cone is all filter as well. Most K&N units have a chrome cap which limits air from the top unlike the KKM product. However, I agree with Lou above. The more filter area the better.

Hey Eliot... I have been looking for more info on his CAI but havent been able to find it. Please post a link to what you found. I am considering something very similar but need more info.
Some possible concerns of mine are filter placement (I would like to be able to drive in the rain) and MAF location (placing the sensor farther away from the TB could possibly cause problems).

Fill me in man. I've got a jones to do some tinkering.

So is your filter down under by the lower grill? Does it get wet when it rains, or is your LS a fair weather car only? What kind of 4" piping did you use? I have been wanting to do something similar but I have the KKM. If there is a way to make the KKM fit vertically through that hole you cut then run piping from it to the TB that would be cool.... but I think the KKM unit is too big.
I see you kept the MAF in the stock(ish) location. Is there any problem with putting it closer to the intake filter (outside the car). It will reach for sure.

Yes, the filter sits in the front bumper area. My car is a fun car, so it is not driven daily unless it has to be driven. I used a combination of 4" PVC tubing and elbows. All connected together with rubber connectors.

I wouldnt move the MAF sensor too much from its stock location.

If you cut the hole under the stock air box you can just put your KKM filter under that area, it should fit, there is a lot of room under there in front of the tire.

Yeah I think the KKM would be too big, but I could see myself running some PVC piping donw to the lower grill in the near future :) .
