I searched previous post and found that other people have had timming chain rattle problems because of the tensioners.

Well, mine (97) is getting worse. Not only does it do it when I start the car, but I can also hear it when I am setting at a stop light (or anytime stopped and in gear). Also, when I put my foot into it and then back off, I hear it just as the car starts to DEcelerate. I have tried Lucas and it may help a bit, but not much.

The car has high miles (150,000), but even with the noise, still runs very strong. I am afraid that if I had stock exhaust I would hear it all the time. I have not put the stethascope (sp) to it yet, but what do you guys and gals think??? My biggest concern is it's not the timming chain tensioners.

i thought the tensioner leak down problem was addressed in late 95 or 96?

i didnt know the gen 2's even had to worry about this problem,???

OK well then you should probably look into getting the a new timing chain before it skips a tooth/teeth and you will get engine damage.

We use Amsoil synthetic and Purolator Pure One anti drainback filter with a byass in it to retain the oil at the tensioners.

The purolator and the motorcraft are the same filters, aren't they? Both have the anti drainback valves in them as well.

Great. I just changed my oil to Mobil 1 to to try to quiet my tensioner rattle.:confused:

No the tensioners are pumped up by oil pressure which inturn tightens them up. When the oil bleeds down the tensioners "rattle" upon startup.

Whith an anti drainback bypass valve this retains MOST of the oil pressure at the tensioners.

I agree with this, but my problem is not just at start up. As I said in my original post, I also get a rattle when I decellerate after getting in to it hard. Its like the chains have been tight and when I let off, the start to rattle.

While I think the correct oil filter would help, I dont think it will solve my entire problem... your thoughts.

How is yor oil pressure? You may want to hook up a mechanical gauge and check it. Maybe it is on the low side? Are you sure it's your tensioner? Not your rod or crank bearings is it? How many miles on it?

What is the mileage? If it is high mileage and has been BEAT ON then that's your answer.
Stretched chains will effect timing under a load and you will get a pronounced detonation (ping). That is something else to listen for.

My Wife's 96 has 165k on it and it still turns 14.80's stock and makes no noise, imagine that a person that actually took care of their car and changed the fluids properly..etc. I think I just got lucky with that car. Hell The TerminVIIIor is on it's Third engine now!! LOL!

how can i fix this on mine i have a 94 and it only does it on start ups in the morning andafter a while of sitting at work?

Get an Amsoil oil filter and use a good thin synthetic oil like the Amsoil 0w-20, it will help for sure.
