More rear end install ?'s

Do all Mark VIIIs have the 8.8? Our books at work show 7.5, 8.5 and 8.8 as optional. I found this when looking up a rebuild kit, and I have already bought 8.8 parts.

What is the easiest way to pull the axles out of the differential?

Is it necessary to pull down the whole center section, or just the front half of it?

How long am I looking at for a full gear install? Ive never done a rearend before, but have pulled plenty of engines and have had plenty of other experience. I will have a lift and any tools I should need.

8.8 & ANY posi unit and 8.8 gears will work, just do the one sided method we developed back in 98' Half the labor that way.

Pull one wheel/axel then slide the other side off the pass. axel.

So theres enough room in there to tweak it around the axle? Do you have a link to a thread or something?

I did one on the LOD site with pics and all but I have no idea where that is? Its simple, take off one side then slide the pumpkin off the other axel.

Just out of curiousity... does anyone know the spec for pinion preload on these rears? 20-25 in lbs? and also what about backlash? I plan on doing this sometime in the future also.

Pinion preload with original bearings is 8-14 lb-in.

Pinion preload with new bearings is 16-29 lb-in.

Backlash Between Ring Gear and Pinion Teeth .008-.013 in.

Preferred Backlash 0.010 in.

Maximum Backlash Variation Between Teeth 0.004 in.

i just unbolted the spindles and let them hang, and then unbolted the differential. From this point I was able to pop the axles loose on each side with a pry bar and then maneuver the diff out. It was actually fairly easy. I imagine that (with a lift and the right tools) you should be able to do it in a couple hours--that's without doing the gears yourself though. I just swapped out the pumpkin.

Good Luck!!

The gear install is really my only concern, not getting the pumpkin out. Will I have to drop the tank?

Yeah, I've never done the gears......I took the pumpkin out without even touching the tank.
