mespock November 10th, 2004, 11:07 AM Ok, '85 Mark is running good but a strange electrical thing is happening.
At night the headlights will brighten then in a bit dim. They don't go to high beam but there seems to be an electrical surge.
Then, after driving for a bit, if I hit the brakes my radio will shut off then turn back on. (no loss of stations and no other electrical items turn off) :frown:
This also happens when I dim the headlights from high beam to low beam, or when I switch on the turn signals.
Now once this happens and the radio comes back on it will not do this again for a few seconds. I can hit the brakes than the radio turns off comes back on I can immedately hit the brakes with nothing happening. Give it about a block and it will happen again.
Car needs to have been running for a bit before this starts to happen. (15 min or so).
:Bang
MonsterMark November 10th, 2004, 11:15 AM I might be inclined to do 2 things.
1) Change the headlight switch.
2) Test the alt and battery for proper voltage output.
Katshot November 10th, 2004, 11:21 AM Check battery, connections, major grounds etc. Maybe even the ignition switch.
pepperman November 10th, 2004, 06:03 PM :I it could be as simple as a gound wire loose or not tight enough.

Disney November 11th, 2004, 11:16 PM Sounds like Volt. reg.
Check battery and alt also.
mespock November 13th, 2004, 10:26 AM Changed the Voltage reg this morning and the radio problem seems to be fixed.
I will have to wait until tonight to see if the light problem is fixed.
Thanks :Beer

Last night was the first night that I got to take her out and check out the lights.
Lights are working great - No more bright than dim. No more problems with the radio.
All is working fine.
Now all I need to to is find what is causing some of the dash lights not to light up. The fuse keep blowing must have a short somewhere. I heard that the pannel dimmer switch can sometimes cause problems.
I can't dim my dash lights so I am thinking of replacing the switch.
OldSchool1 November 21st, 2004, 09:31 AM Fuse then switch. You're getting there!

Will a dimmer switch from an 89 Mark VII work with an 85 Mark VII?

I don't know.
Externally, they appear to be the same.
