My buddy just got a 96 Crown Vic and its throwing codes P179 and P189.
P179-Fuel system at lean adaptive limit at partial throttle/system rich.
P189-Fuel system at rich adaptive limit at partial throttle/system lean.

Any ideas? Was thinking of cleaning the MAF and seeing if that helps.

That's exactly what happened to my '97 Crown Vic,the only thing was it kept coming up after I changed the MAF sensors, tuned it up, et. al, .The"check engine" light fiasco started becoming a major problem that eventually was found out to be the computer (OBD-II) going bad. After putting down mad $'s into what should have been about $200 or less to repair (Here, MAF sensors were $79 apiece)(there are 2.) Also, when this was going on I had to take this beast to a Mechanic, (I did not have time to do this myself, mad overtime @ work, averaging 80+ hours a week.) I ended up having to give up the Crown Vic when it finally died on some train tracks! (pushed the car off & had it towed to the local Ford dealer) That was the day I got the Lincoln.
(Sorry to be ramblin' on, I'm just trying to say be careful on this problem.)
More than likely, the MAF sensors are what the problem is, (My '97 CV also had 165K when that problem developed {the OBD-II problem, that is.} Good Luck!)
