changed plugs and wires

My Mark VIII has 114,000 miles on the origional spark plugs and wires. I decided to change them just because of the mileage. The plugs looked great for those miles! Still had the factory installed motorcraft platinums in it. I put new wires and platinum plugs back in and she still runs the same, as good as ever, No difference that I can tell as far as power gains. The motorcraft platinums are some darn good plugs!!! I hear a lot of talk about the plug threads being stripped out and oil leaking past the valve cover seals, the plugs came right out and went back in nice and smooth. I did use a tourqe wrench set at 15 ft pounds just to get them all evenly snug and some anti seize as well. No oil either, guess I got lucky! Over all a very easy job to do.

Looks like all 8 are burning clean.

Just curious though, Why do so many of them strip out? Is it because of previous owners over tightening them or cross threading them? They just don't mess up on their own, do they???

Yep! Origional motorcraft plugs at 114,000 miles. The previous owner had never had the plugs changed. All of the wires were also origional and had never been tampered with either. Why do you ask? they are made to go 100k before a scheduled tune up, aren't they?

Proper Torque is 6.6-7.3 lbft.

I changed my plugs at or around 90,000 miles on the 96 and they looked like the ones pictured. I guess that's how you know it's been babied...

no it's not paint, it's just the color of the motorcrafts.

Does anyone have any pics of how the wires are done on the Gen 2?

Gen 2=s don't have wires.

The short rubber boots running from the coil to the plug is all it is. There is a small spring inside that that is used to transmit current. To change them, pull the coil covers, and then pull each individule (sp) coil out. the boot and spring will pull right off of the coil.

rockauto.com is the best place to buy replacments.

Gen 2 has the coil on top of plug, no wires on top of motor. Usually you replace the coil with the short wire.

Thanks for the info. I had no idea that the torque was only 6-7 lb ft. Well I did use a 12" extension so that should have reduced it a bit too. Thanks for the specs. :)
