Big Three Upgrade (Charging system)

So I have now gone through a total of 5 alternators since I installed my second amp in my car. I should say 2 alternators, one rebuilt twice one on it's way to be refurbished for the 3rd time. I spoke to the guy who has been rebuilding for me and it turns out he has been using a stock voltage regulator on my alternator which was rewound for 200 amps. I'm thinking that's why the voltage regulator keeps giving out. Odds are pretty good that this will solve my problem. However, I have seen some talk about upgrading the "Big Three".

Here's my question...
What exactly are the big three? How difficult is it to up grade them? What materials would I need to do this myself? Ok, so it's 3 questions:rolleyes:

Please be specific - seems like this is a process that will save me ( and probably a lot of other MK VIII owners) a lot of grief.

Thanks in advance!!!

I would like to make all the wires in advance. Anybody have details on how much wire I'll need to get?

I don't remember how much I bought when I did it.

You can use a tape measure, to find measure the distances between each point where you'll be connecting wire. Get a foot or two more than you actually need.

What if I end up (---) this much short? Thanks for the advice Mespock. I checked it out and it is easy enough to get a tape measure in there. I ASSumed:leghumper that it would be inaccessible like everything else is.

Last question, School Zone. What guage wire did you use. Different posts recommend everything from 4 to 0/1. 0/1 seems like EXTREEM overkill, then again overkill=safe. If whatever you did worked, I'll go with that.

I used 4 gauge. The only reason not to use 0 gauge wire is money. If you can find 0 gauge wire at a price/foot you can afford, then I see no reason not to use it.

Try going to a welding supply store. 0 Gauge welding cable will do you just fine, and I think it is cheaper.
