Best Air or Carpet Freshener

mespock
August 1st, 2006, 04:44 PM
I spent a lot of time cleaning out my 94 Mark VIII...

Took out the seats and scrubbed her carpet down good. She's a lot cleaner now.

But now she smells 100% cleaner but lacking in someway...

Any suggestions to helping her smell good? Better than just a hanging air freshener or the Wal-Mart spray bottles that just cover the smell until you re-spray..

Who's got the word on some very good I guess I should call it carpet freshener.

To be honest with you, I feel it depends the color of your car.

For example. My '94, for some reason just seemed like an apple-cinnamin scented car. Just felt like that. However; my '97 has the ivory interior, and I find that either Bannana Nut or Vanilla are the two best.

Just a suggestion, and those I'm sure you could buy at your local carwash.

I really don't like to mess with the natural smell of a car, unless the thing stinks or something. Cars have a unique scent. Call me crazy, but when I get in my old 76 Mustang just to sit in it in the barn up north, the smell is the same. My LSE, LSC, my truck, TC all have there own scent. Even when at a car show everytime I stick my head in the window of a 76 Tornado, it smells the same as my uncles when I was 5yrs old. My brother bought a 73 Ambassador a couple years back and he couldn't get over how it had the same scent as his first car, a 73. Thats nearly 30yrs later. Its scary sometimes, but very true.

Now if a car stinks and you have to get rid of the stentch, thats different. Hasn't happen to me yet.

Problem was the car had an oder from sitting back last year when I purchase it. The car had the same oder still which smelled like it had sat for a while.. a stale smell.

When I went to cleaning it yesterday there had been a coffe spilled in the back floor... I'm assuming it was from Scott's Wife after he was showing her how fast the car went... LOL... Just kidding good friend.

But after the cleaning concoction that Danny came up with to really scrup down the carpet. Now after all is clean a dry there s still an oder that I need to get rid of... I don't want to keep this smell.. I've done good with other cars getting rid of smoker smells but this one is a little harder to eliminate.

I'm going to go looking tomorrow... I'm just looking for suggestions before I go hunting... A lot of carpet leaners use ammonia and I really don't want that smell.

I had the same thing happen to me w/ my '72 Torino (351C, Arr~arr). My parents had one back in the day. After I bought it in '00, they said it smelled like a '72 Torino....
Both in my Mark VIII and the LS8, Meguiar's leather care lotion brought out the best "smells" in the cars.

I used some on the seats but this smell is in the carpet... that coffee spill must have been in there a long time...

Fast and stinky, all things have a trade off. JK.

You see that Seinfeld episode?

Seriously a good cleaning with a good product should do the trick, the cleaning product smell should go away in time. I used seats from a junkyard car we bought once that were in great shape but the car had no doors and no glass when we got it and the seats were actually frozen. I thought for sure they stink, cleaned up and no smell, go figure.

Eeww, sugar and cream stains, ucky.... Just a thought if you pull the carpet out you can get more of the left over stench out from the back side and what ever else is remaining on the floor pan. Maybe you will find a tip! In my '64 1/2 ton I found a Mercury Head dime. That was the POR15 treatment and sound deadening upfit on my floor pan.

Haha POR15 check out my TC in my garage. Did alot of that.

You got to be careful with cleaning the carpet out off the car, its a good idea but if you steam clean it with some strong equipment, they can shrink and fit like crap going bank in.

My handy dandy carpet cleaning chart sez;

Spotting solution.
Mix 1/2-teaspoon clear hand washing detergent with one cup water. Stir gently.

Then;

Apply spotting solution using small amounts and blot frequently. Do not rub, scrub, or brush. It may be necessary to repeat.

If this doesn't work call VanGo carpet Co. (623...) ~ What the Heck!! J/K

That is a nice looking ride.

I would think localized cleaning of the spot/stain wouldn't do to much to make it shrink. Would you agree?

Thanks. Lots of POR

Yeah I think as long as your not saturating and sucking the entire carpet with some pretty powerful equipment you should be fine. I only say that because I "heard it". I also looked at a car at a car lot once and the carpet seemed oddly small like it was short of being tucked under the kick panels and stuff. Didn't look like a replacement. I know the common at a lot is to clean the piss out of them to make them look thier best and assummed this caused it.

Those cleaners have to be used repeatedly. I cleaned up a dirty truck seat once. It looked like crap, but wasn't ripped or anything. I went at it with one of those cleaners with the brush right on the top. Seemed to work but wasn't quite good enough, did more and more, I think on the third or forth can it looked like new, like perfect. Got to really work it.

thx-

W/ my '64 i had the seats out during the floor pan R&R and cut the hog rings off the fabric and washed the seat covers...NASTY!! Three washings w/ fabric softener later, Beautiful!! If I had only caught the wind shield leak before spoiling the new carpet and ensuing odors. ;/

I don't very often because she could have been the one who owned my 94 for at one time LOL... She is the worse at keeping a car clean and has had many spills that I've cleaned up after they had a chance to set in for a while... I don't know why she will not clean out her car.

Yikes. Different priorities I guess. I'm not a total wipe it down weekly neat freak, but theres no spilling or any garbage left in my cars. Actually I haven't cleaned my LSE interior since I bought it a year ago. Its due and a bit dusty, but I've never spilled and theres no garbage in it ever. Couple stray frys between the seats maybe.

Rappers?!? Yo yo "torquey m" on the Mike!

The fabric softener work for you, good to hear. During the hot months, dryer sheets in the glove box of under the seats work wonders too. Old lot Tech. trick from back in the day. Some fellas would put them in the A/C air return to get the most benefit from the aroma. Could get stuck and/or limit air flow, just a thought.

Rich, is the fabric softener still working? My red car has that musty smell from sitting too long also.

I removed the carpet and power washed it 2 months ago and that helped a lot. While the carpet was out (about a week) I could still smell the musty odor in the car though.

I'm thinking my odor is coming from the headliner.

Maybe I could spray it with fabric softener too?

It worked what I've been doing is at least once a week spraying it with some cover smell and the bad musty smell is leaving.

The fabric softener really did a great job of grabbing hold of the oder and killing most of it. Then there was that little bit that just lingered. Now she's smelling 100% better.

Shhh, thats way less effort. If my '64 is an example of how "pre-formed" carpet is the norm, I would clean what I have in the car. Fighting to get the carpet in place and fit the tunnel right was quite a chore.

Mequair's Marine/RV Carpet cleaner (M7321) under $15.00- spray can is great stuff - made for vehicles that are not used much and really removes old musty odors.

If really bad use Meguiar's Car Oder Eliminator (G2310) under $5.00. Worked great on a week old milk spill in my daughter's computer room!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dominus makes a good point. For getting nasty mats sparkling clean, taking them out at the car wash and soaking them with the nastiest suds they have - like engine cleaner - then pressure washing for several minutes after the soak, and followed by sucking the moisture out with their vacuum works VERY well - makes them nearly new again. I would imagine if you had the main carpet out of the car and gave it the same treatment, it would have similar results. But the pressure washer is the key - I don't think a hose would cut it.

billcu
August 17th, 2006, 09:26 PM
The pressure washer works great on the carpet. I did that to mine. I used soap first then rinsed it, then soap again and rinsed again. I draped the carpet on my Workmate stand and tried not to get the padding too wet.

Then I used my shop vac to get most of the water out and then dried it in the sun for 2 days and stored it in the house for a couple days to make sure that it was dry.

While the carpet was out of my car, I could still smell the musty smell. Not as bad though. That's why now I think it's in my headliner.

mespock
August 17th, 2006, 10:19 PM
I did a pretty good job of washing and scrubbing the carpet then took a shop vac and left it out in the 100+ degree temp for a good afternoon.

It did a very good job, but there was still a slight smell. Today it's smelling pretty good.
