MrWilson August 1st, 2006, 09:08 AM I took off my hub to get the studs pressed in, cuz craftsman makes :q:q:q:qty air guns and mine broke. so now i have to screw the nuts back on, and all its doing is getting to a part where there is tension on the threads and then the ball joint just spins when im tryin to screw it on, or off. so i have half threaded nuts that wont go on anymore, or off. wtf do i do. the sway bar linkage i dont have room for channel locks, and the lower ball joint will eventually run out of room for channel locks, and there isnt realy any room for them to began with. wtf do i do? this job is pissin me the f off.
4.6powa August 1st, 2006, 09:16 AM you can use a c clamp, or big vise grips and get it in the taper as tight as you can. use a lot of lube. what i did, was since i took out the whole controll arm and everything, i spun the rusty threads on a wire wheel on a bench grinder, to clean them up. it made it so much easier.

Mr. Wilson, the ball joint is probably junk if thats happening, I'm not mocking you, I've only have had that happen when removing bad units usually tie rod ends and stab links. Loading it with a jack or pry bar my help.

Roadboss August 1st, 2006, 05:44 PM If your are trying to tighten the nut up, I use a standard nut to tighten up the unit so that it makes contact with the taper, I then unlossen this nut and screw on thelocking one, as the friction of the taper will not let the threads spin,
4.6powa August 1st, 2006, 05:53 PM i found out the hard way and, i already said how i did it. i was taking the balljoint off and the nut was really rusted to the joint, and a pita to turn... as i am unscrewing the nut... (being the bright guy i am) i didnt want to mess up the threads when dislodging it from its taper so i decided to hit the joint down with the nut still part way on. as it dropped my heart sank realizing what a stupid thing i just did, since there was no way to stop the joint from turning. thats where a c-clamp came in and a prybar... i also have now found my balljoint fork which would have been the proper way to do it...
just thought i would share my stupidity...

94m5 August 1st, 2006, 06:26 PM everyone that was born knowing everying please take a flying leap out of the 95 floor. 62 years on this planet and still learning and trying to help those in need. if you don't have a pickle fork try using flat chisles to remove the old joint use pentatrating oil kroil or pb blaster the 2 best. even wd will held. also use 2 hammers one held to the opposite side you are hitting on the control arm. not the ball joint. sometimes they are a son of a llllllllll . to put the new one on use a 6 in c clamp and a socket to let the thread come thru the control arm. if using a hammer to lossen up the old one take the castaled nut off and turn it over on the threads to save it old racer trick. take care jd

thanks a bunch, the pickle fork idea seems to hold it in place. i dont have time to do it tonight, but ill try it out on thurs for sure. and if not the c clamp, like you said and was said before, should do the trick. thank you very much. Its nice to know some people still have respect for their fellow human beings.
chickenviii August 1st, 2006, 08:10 PM i just load it with a pry bar but you will need a BIG AZZED one and be turning the nut at the same time i got a old 4' drag link that i use at work just keep pressure on the taper and it will hold it and a jack works great for the lower

Mr. Wilson, don't get your panties in a uproar. With all the trial and tribulations you go thru, and all the start and stop projects we've seen, taking a few pokes at you is all in jest. Have a little humor. After all, you cetainly entertain us enough. Time for you to have some fun too and appreciate the good-natured ribbing. :D
