i have a 1998 non-LSC Mark VIII with about 110k in miles and today i heard a not completely unfamiliar thump thump thump in the rear and the car kind of dragging itself. first thought was a flat tire. no such luck. i know it's difficult to diagnose a problem without being in front of the vehicle, but does anyone have an idea of what would cause the thump thump thumping and not being to drive very fast at all?
i know a new tranny will cost 1400, so im hoping its a problem in between like differential or something - that wont be as invasive to the car and my wallet.
any ideas? all help would be greatly appreciated.

no - i got in, after only just been in it for 100 miles on the highway not 15 mins earlier....and thump thump thump going down the street, a little sluggish to move......i could have sworn it was a flat in the rear, although i couldnt tell which side. no bumps in the road at all. i pulled back into the parking lot of my office, looked and saw nothing wrong with the cars tires and it was level, got back in and drove down the street again to see if i could tell what it was - thump thump thump i went and it even did it when i put the tranny in neutral and rolled a bit.
does that help? its going to the shop monday morning, but id like to have a handle on what im up against.
anyone?

Hey bro. I got the same sound on my 96. MIne only comes from the passenger side though. I just changed over to the lowered coil kit and its still there so im changing the shocks this weekend. I'll let you know if it solves the problem.
