HOT 97 July 27th, 2006, 07:13 PM hello i just install a rear and matrix driveshaft i think i have a problem when i drive the car i hear a whine and then i get a hopping feeling from the rear and if i let the car coast then press the gas i hear a clunk noise. please hlep
NYC LS8 July 27th, 2006, 07:17 PM Who built the rear? Sounds like it could be a bad pinion bearing. I had that happen in my '87 (the clunk).
HOT 97 July 27th, 2006, 07:21 PM i brought it off of roadboss
JC1994 July 27th, 2006, 07:24 PM i brought it off of roadboss
Uh oh......:(
NYC LS8 July 27th, 2006, 07:25 PM Are all the driveshaft to pinion gear bolts tight?
HOT 97 July 27th, 2006, 07:27 PM tight as i could get them
HOT 97 July 27th, 2006, 08:12 PM could it be that the axel bolt is to tight or i broke one of the spindle bolt and just use some bolt i found at home depot
HOT 97 July 27th, 2006, 08:14 PM and when i put it in gear that when i hear the clunk
HOT 97 July 28th, 2006, 07:56 PM today as i was driving home the car is fast as hell chirp second like a bat outta hell but i still get that clunk . i really hear it when i put the car in reverse any ideas any one
JMiles_T July 28th, 2006, 08:59 PM Check for a bad motor mount
and/or...
bad rear differential bushing(s)
chickenviii July 28th, 2006, 09:00 PM the pinion depth could be wrong or poss the u-joints
HOT 97 July 28th, 2006, 10:56 PM i just put in a new matrix driveshaft
94m5 July 29th, 2006, 12:01 AM I'm gonna go with pinion bearing, do you get any wierd noises under normal cruise?
chickenviii July 29th, 2006, 07:45 AM i just put in a new matrix driveshaft
and?????? is it fixed?
HOT 97 July 29th, 2006, 08:01 AM when i did the rear change i put in a new driveshaft so i'm pretty sure it's not the u joints
HOT 97 July 29th, 2006, 08:04 PM today when i got home from work the rear passenger rim was super hot could it be that the axel bolt is too tight. it was double the heat then the other side
NYC LS8 July 29th, 2006, 08:13 PM Seized caliper?
HOT 97 July 29th, 2006, 08:22 PM i have change that caliper multpy times for getting stuck on me i wonder if that is the cause of all the problems. i had to push the pistion back in to get it on the rotor when i rotated the piston brake fluid started to leak out of it . and when i was driving it home the abs light came on and t/c off light came on
brentalan July 29th, 2006, 08:44 PM Yeah, that's not good, fix the caliper first and then see how things are.
HOT 97 July 29th, 2006, 08:47 PM i brought it at auto zone . so first thing in the morning i'm going to check it , if it is that then i'm taking it back to auto zone because it has a warranty.
HOT 97 July 30th, 2006, 06:54 PM ok so today i jack up the car and check under the rear for any loose bolts their where all tight checked the d/s bolts they where tight check the spindle bolts they where tight when i went to check the axel bolt it some how was only like hand tight so i retighted it. i don't know how this came loose. the calpier was working fine not stuck or sticking. i took the car for a ride it felt much better but still has a whine to it at low speeds, and also still get a clunk when i put it into reverse and i also get the clunk on right turns for some reason. it also some time clunk on deaccelaration. i stumped on trying to figure it out i'm problebly end up taking the rear out and putting the factory one back in
94m5 July 30th, 2006, 06:56 PM What did you tighten the 36MM wheel bearing nuts to? factory calls for 250 LBft, and should be followe right on, thats what sets your bearing crush. too loose, and the bearing will eat it's self apart. too tight, and youll sieze it up.
How old are the cv shafts?
HOT 97 July 30th, 2006, 07:12 PM i think their are factory so they got to be 9 years old and my torqe wench only goes to 150 where do you get something to go to 240
94m5 July 30th, 2006, 07:24 PM Snap-on, MAC, Matco...... they all have 1/2" units that go that high, but you could prolly go with a cheaper 3/4" unit and save some money.
Mike
HOT 97 July 30th, 2006, 09:40 PM i just went to blockbuster to get some movies and i got on the mark 8. buy the time i got to blockbuster the back of the car felt like it was hopping up and down the rear is a piece of :q:q:q:q the car drove fine before it and know drive's like :q:q:q:q i pulling this unit out on my next day off.
HOT 97 August 3rd, 2006, 01:32 PM today i took the 430 out . iopen up the housing and eveything look fine i also took off the spedo gear (white gear) and it was all broken. could have this been the problem.
HOT 97 August 5th, 2006, 07:19 PM hey guys i need help in this matter i change the rear out and put the old one back in now everything was fine until i decide to get on the high way today.the car drove fine until it past 60miles after that it started to viberate very voilent. i could not go past 70 miles i pulled over checked every thing it was fine, but it sound like the back driver tire was rubbing i let the car blow back up then i turn the air ride off the car felt like it was driving fine . and when i put the car in drive or reverse i still get a very loud clunk . could this be the drive shaft i have the mmx shaft so could this be defected or what i don't know what to do please help
JMiles_T August 5th, 2006, 09:38 PM Did you check the motor mounts like I suggested?
HOT 97 August 5th, 2006, 10:02 PM Did you check the motor mounts like I suggested?
how do you check them
JMiles_T August 6th, 2006, 01:42 AM You need to be able to see the engine while sitting in the driver's seat, so pop the hood and raise it all the way open.
Hold your foot on the brake pedal, and shift into reverse. While continuing to hold the brake pedal with 1 foot, use your other foot to push the throttle, gradually raising the engine RPM toward 3000 rpm. If you see the engine lift up more than an inch on the passenger side, the mount on the passenger side needs to be replaced.
You can do the same with the transmission in Drive to check the driver's side mount.
If the problem is one of the mounts, the "clunk" you hear is the engine dropping back down after lifting itself up in the air. My first guess is it's the one on the passenger side.

If the motor mount was gone, you would know it, you would feel it, and whenever you got on it, you would see hood vibrate from the CLUNK! when it slaps down. (i see it every day) it doesnt sound like it has to do with the rear itself (pumpkin unit), it realy sounds like a u joint problem to me.
your having problems with your air suspension?
Dominus August 6th, 2006, 08:10 AM Double check that driveshaft. It may not be as good as you are thinking.
The first driveshaft I got for the Charger had its U-Joint damaged during shipping and I never knew it until I put it in and it sucked.

the weird this is that i bust my hump putting in the rear and driveshaft in, and this whole time i thought it was the rear and now that i changed it it still has the problem.
lincoln's some times you love them sometime you you hate them.
Dominus August 6th, 2006, 01:12 PM Check the driveshaft. Never assume something is good just because it is new.
HOT 97 August 6th, 2006, 03:17 PM guess what guys i found the problem. 1. i think i need new motor mounts because the motor really moves a lot. 2. and the other problem is driver side cv shahft or axel what ever you call it is shot the joint between the abs sprocket and shaft hops and clunks like crazy.
i have two spare axel from a 98 mark viii with about 80,000 miles on them should i put this in or should i just buy a new one i saw that i can get one from auto zone for like 59.00
after all the problems it was a damn axel
chickenviii August 7th, 2006, 08:53 PM id beware of autozone (im surprised rich hasent stepped in yet) but i would deff swap out the diff again and while you are in there just replace both the axels, why not, havent you been in there too much latelly?
