Solid Rear swap

MrWilson

Has anyone done, or heard of, or is planning on, or knows how hard it is, or how practicle it is to do a solid rear swap on the mk? What rear would we use? does the t-bird or coug have solids? or would we use like...a rustang gt's rear?

Why on Earth would you want to backpedal into the stoneage and go with a solid rear?

Lose all that nice ride..etc.

Believe me I will challenge you to break it if thats the reason you were going to give.

All the Marks we have ever done in 8 years, we have only ever once broken ONE rear part and that was a CV joint that had 180k. Belive me Andy put your money elsewhere in the car.

The only one I have ever seen is a full on tube chassis drag car. There really is no point of swapping it unless you got :q:q:q:qloads of torque.

Also...i like the way my solid was with the monte vs how the irs is with the mk.

Ummm.....maybe because a solid rear can launch one heck of a lot better than a IRS vehicle. Also it seems that Wilson has some fairly large plans in the future for his Mark. If he will be making anymore than 500rwhp or so then it would be good to either go with a custom DSS halfshaft setup on his existing IRS or swap to a solid.

Heck Wilson why not just go with a 4 link rear with solid axle while you will be back there. Gives the decent ride and superior weight transfer ability for launching.

For the amount of energy, money and time, why not get a car that is already set-up with right suspension? You could drop the mill of your choice into it.

LOL The IRS is BORN to drag race. Squats like the devil and transfers weight perfectly.

You must be deaf or just do not pay attention.

Ill say it again, in 8 (eight) years I have only seen one cv joint break and that was with a car that had 180k on the body along with NOS 150 shot and slicks.

STICKS break them NOT autos!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hehehehe. While sticks do have one hell of a lot more shock factor when launching at 6,500 rpms or so, highly modded autos still can break them especially if the person is running a transbrake and able to launch at a high rpm too.

Just because you haven't seen it doesn't mean it does not occur.

Now I am not talking anything with mere bolt-ons obviously, but in modded form (500+rwhp) they can/will/have broke in many auto cars.

I cannot guage whether Wilson would need a different axle because I don't have a good idea to his future planned mods. Whatever they may turn out to be, I get the impression that they won't be just a mere 150 shot of nitrous on a stock-ish DOHC 4.6 motor.

BTW Wilson what do you have planned?

True that the T-56 is the king of breaking drivelines, but power is power. Worst comes to worse, a 31 spline swap may be in order. We will see what happens though. No use in arguing a moot point.

a whole lot of fun. Its a shock and awe campaign.
Its along the lines of the FR500C

How come Cobra guys do a solid rear swap when they're building a drag only car? How come the Supra guys blame IRS when they can't hook?

im guessing the popular responce will be....they have sticks!

true irs is gay with one wheel, but a posi and brace makes irs very happy for dragging.

Ohhhh..... DOHC 5.0 Stroker with cams....Nice! It should make some pretty decent power, though probably not enough to cause a lot of breakage in your stock IRS. That is, unless you use a transmission with a transbrake in it. Any possibility of F/I in the cars later future too or sticking with N/A?

A manual will make it worse for an IRS car but it can't all be blamed on the stick. An auto car will still hook better without IRS.

who knows what the future holds. It is a destinct possability, but not for a LONG LONG time. anything i say about F/I would be purely speculation and hopeful thinking at this point. When funds look more promising, i may be able to say more.

oh and its harder to pop a wheelie with irs too... :) ( i know what picture geno will post to refute that :) )

You have all sorts of stuff that can be done to and for the IRS. Huge half-shafts are available. All kinds of pumpkin reinforcing kits. New metal-matrix driveshafts.

Worrying about the rear ends on these cars is the last thing to worry about.

The stanger guys are side stepping the clutch at 5000 rpms and wheel hopping and breaking the shafts. Take care of the wheel hop and you won't have to worry about a 3200 stall converter in an auto trashing the rear. If you are, install a pumpkin girdle and drop on some new half-shafts along with your 'posi' 4.10's.

The Cobra-Kit guys love and covet our IRS rear end and aluminum pumpkin.

We have a terrific trans in the 4R70W that if built up right, will last a lifetime, and take 600 hp all day long.

We have the best aluminum block money can buy.

Port and polish our heads and they flow as good as any of them out there.

Return-style fuel system can't be beat. Toss on a good pump and you can throw the hp at it at will.

I just don't get it sometimes. We have one of the best platforms ever built system-wise. Forget about the chassis. The unibody sucks. Agreed.

But the air-ride is state of the art. Check all the custom magazines. They are charging "THOUSANDS" to convert to air. Here we have guys going to springs. Again, I just don't get it.

Take the time to understand what you have. There is plenty of info on this site and others on what it takes to go fast. Want to turn faster, toss on some new beefier swaybars.

The list goes on and on.

I've been driving Mark VIII's for over 10 years. Haven't made a car payment in over 8 years. If my '98 gets tired, I'll simply go out and buy another low mile '98 for pocket change and run it for 5 years maintenance free. A brake job and tires here and there is all I have ever had to spend once I stopped manually shifting my Gen 1's from 4th to 2nd and toasting the tranny. Other than that, there is no better car in the world for the money, especially right now. Hands down the best and most car you can buy for the money.
