AFAIK, there was no bracket to hold the gas cap. It was simply tethered by a plastic wire and dangles on the fender when you add gas.

I bought a guard from a Corvette supplier:

It's only $10 and fits on the filler neck without tools. I can tell you that it drapes down far onto the fender and protects it from the gas cap. You may want to get one of these!

Well, I just cut the plastic thing that held the gas cap on. I still have the bolt in place but now I can freely put the cap somewhere besides dangling from the car.

That is what I did on my 98 Continental.

You do realize that the cap is tethered for a reason, right? Bad things can happen if you untether your gas cap!

NO no, I just took a plastic knive and cut the plastic peice in the middle, leaving the sninning part alone.

Same here on the Conti. That was 3 years ago and my son has not reported any problems so far.

there are clear vinyl stickers you can buy, just apply to where the cap would hit your paint, i've seen them on a few vettes and they are pretty unnoticeable.

Which is the sninning part?

Point is that if you lose your gas cap, you can damage the emission control system. That tether is there to prevent that. It's a real bad idea to cut it off.
