justcauz March 19th, 2004, 09:52 PM I know that seems like an odd question but I have come to find that Conti owners are a bread of there own.
I would like to know why you decided to own a Continental?
I am the proud owner of three Conti’s and I love something about each one.
:W
Joeychgo March 19th, 2004, 10:04 PM WELCOME!
Bring some fellow conti owners here -- so we can have a group of conti owners! Your right, a breed of their own and we would love to have all of you find a home here!
Conti94 March 21st, 2004, 09:24 AM How are you I'm a new Member and proud owner of a 1994 Lincoln Continental
Performance white over Burgandy leather. We are a breed of our own why? I don't really know maybe it's because the looks and comforts on a Continental are as pampering as they come. :L :D
Spidar6996 March 21st, 2004, 08:34 PM Continentals Are the comfort riding cars whiles the Mark’s look more sporty. That is the only difference I can come up with but then again I am one of the only guys here that doesn’t own a Lincoln. LOL
Joeychgo March 21st, 2004, 08:44 PM You'll get there one day Brein....
BRIAN O'KEEFE March 29th, 2004, 07:53 AM I presume that most of you are talking about the new front wheel drive Continentals (I'm new here) but the ones I like are the '60's suicide door converts-I own two '67's. Does anyone else on this site have a '60's Continental, convert or hardtop?
Joeychgo March 29th, 2004, 07:54 AM Ohh those are sharp!
Unfortunately, no I dont own one.
Pepsi2185 April 1st, 2004, 03:37 PM With the amount of time i spend on ebay staring at them i might as well act like i do.
The question is why not a continental. I think you guys remember the mid eighties continental. 87 being my favority besides the mid sixties drop tops. You get the speed of a mark seven with as much enhanceability (is that a word?) and the size and comfort of a town car without that F150 feeling engine. Besides that a heck of a lot more options, TC being the flagship i think not it always was the continental, the most options, and the best resale value. No matter what kind of lincoln you favor anyone can agree on a continental.

J Ashley April 1st, 2004, 11:58 PM I like the conts of the 60's and 70's. The 80's ones look pretty good but they are too small for my taste. You may say "its not small". But you have to understand all the cars I've ever owned (and ever will) have been rather large(look at my sig).
I've heard horror stories about the servicability and reliability of 90's conts. Is this just a common misconception? Being that I haven't owned one I wouldn't know. People say bad things about the 80's TC's reliability but I have to say they are built solid.
Does the 80s-90s cont have a dedicated following like the mark and TC? If so I am very glad. American cars need a following.
:L
Pepsi2185 April 2nd, 2004, 02:35 AM LOLOL the late eighties early nineties continental. Oooooh jeez. Mostly known as "the v6 one" and yes are completely junk. Every sensor display computer and part on that car will go out. They are very expensive cars and usually people that stop buying lincolns in my experience stop buying them because they get "a v6 lincoln". For starters the bad head gaskets, and the bad digital dash. Then the small stuff like buzzers and switches and sensors. Throw in the most unorthidox air ride system that lincoln has had and you have yourself a hard one to love. But i know a lot of people who have one and they do not do all that bad stuff to everyone. Just the head gaskets. People tend to steer clear of those years unless they really love the car.
Do we have any V6 conti lovers in here???!!!!
Conti94 April 7th, 2004, 07:30 PM Yes I am a 88-94 Conti fan I own one (Conti94). anyway's I think it's just luck you get good ones and you get bad one's mine is a great one safe to say. :) I think the people who have lots of trouble with these and keep them are addicted to the ride and beauty of these Conti's there like expensive women who put whole's in you're pockets you can't stop spending and want to but just can't let go. ;) :L
Pepsi2185 April 9th, 2004, 02:12 AM Very well spoken.
DonRich90 April 22nd, 2004, 10:02 PM Hi Guys! I just joined the forum a few minutes ago and I'd like to sa "HI". I have a '98 Conti (white over tan leather) and I love it. It's a modern-styled car with a real sweet V8 and FWD and rides like a luxury car but still handles like a much sportier car - what's not to love.
purelux April 24th, 2004, 10:35 PM I have a 98 towncar and my dad has a 97 continental. I was just trying to isolate what was thought to be a suspension problem on his. Turned out to be the 3rd brake light, anyways. I was noticing the electronic connector on all 4 shocks then remenbering the high cost the dealer gave for the shocks. Which at the time I couldn't understand. I had just assumed that the firm, normal, plush was commanding the air-springs in back only. As I had been told the 95's or 96's were the last of the 4 wheel air struts. But you are actually commanding the shocks. There also there seem to be height/weight sensors at all 4 wheels as well. That really suprised me since cadillac made it sound like they were the first to use the quick acting hydro shocks with magnetic fluid vs the air shocks they had used for 10x quicker reaction time. It's a shame with a bit beefier tranny and maybe an available or standard Ls diff it could really compete performance as well as ride with cars such as lexus, benz, acura etc... Also the stigma of lincoln hurt them as well. As while I do prefer rwd and really want a mark VIII I have to say the 97 is really a very nice car. And comparing a year or 2 year old conti to a acura or lex price wise isn't even close.
Jibit April 26th, 2004, 12:08 PM I presume that most of you are talking about the new front wheel drive Continentals (I'm new here) but the ones I like are the '60's suicide door converts-I own two '67's. Does anyone else on this site have a '60's Continental, convert or hardtop?
I have a '67 T-Bird with suicide doors. I like the continentals more though because they were available in a convertible.
evillally May 10th, 2004, 05:33 AM I just purchased a black beauty 2002 Lincoln Continental. I call her, "Black Sunshine" (after a White Zombie track about a black 400 horsepower Ford  )
I bought it for the power and style. I must say, this is one fancy car. I feel rich! I used to own a Crown Vic, but I got sick of the whole "cop thing". The Crown Vic is a nice car, but the Conti is ruler!
I'll post photos of my Conti soon!
barry2952 May 11th, 2004, 03:08 PM You all drive Lincolns. The only true Continental is the 1956-57 Continental Mark II. All other Continentals were made by the Lincoln Division of Ford Motor Company. The Mark II was $10,000 in 1956 and a regular Lincoln was under $5,000. It was virtually a hand built car in the Deusenberg tradition.
Continental was a separate division of Ford Motor company for about four years. It had been the Special Products Division. Its only product was the Mark II although a four door version and a Retractable hardtop version were planned. The Retractable roof mechanism was transferred to the Ford Division to be used in the 1957 Skyliner.
I'm not saying anything bad about your cars. I have a 1977 Lincoln Continental Town Car with 16,000 miles on it. I love my Town Car, but it is a Lincoln.

NO1GRAM May 15th, 2004, 12:01 PM I have in the past owned a 66 Cont coupe, a 72 Cont coupe and a 71 MkIII.
I wish I still had all of them. I went several years without :L a Lincoln in my garage, but in 2002 I bought a new 2002 Cont (actually for my wife) and it is a fine automobile. Rides and drives good, gets very good gas mileage and that is important in these time when gasoline is so outrageously high. I will stop rambling, but I love all Lincolns, whether Continentals or Town Cars or Marks and will continue to drive them as long as I can.
To Barry - That blue Mark II Conv that you own is a beautiful automobile and I know you are proud of it. It is a shame that there were not enough of them made to go around, so I guess you and one more person (if the other one is around somewhere ?) will be the only ones to enjoy owning them.
mach8 May 15th, 2004, 10:54 PM The very first car I could call my own was a '61 Conti. It was a fine looking car inside and out, held five adult sized teenagers, all of the luggage we wanted to haul, and would still get up and go. My older brother had a '65 Conti rag-top that was a real sharp set of wheels. These cars handled much better than the Caddy's, and had better finished interiors. Less of a Vegas touch you might say.
barry2952 May 16th, 2004, 01:09 PM NO1GRAM,
Thanks for the kudos. The second Mark II convertible is owned by the Goeppinger family of Boone, Iowa.
There have been about a dozen made over the years, but only two were authorized by Ford. There are several replicas for sale. Mine is the only one with the distinctive metal boot covering the top bows.

96 conti June 24th, 2004, 10:48 AM all it took was a test drive. its the smoothest driving cars ive ever been in, has planty of room, plenty of power (outside of first gear), and all the bells and whistles. its been in the shop for 3 months (all together) and has a brand new rear suspension, thousands of new sensors, a few hundred feet of new wiring. but its all worth it, cuz its just such a comfortable car. :L
eightiesgod June 26th, 2004, 02:38 PM Bought the car and am in love, except for some popping noise in the front which the dealer says seems to be the ball joint, can't really complain. One thing I like is the price I paid for such awesome luxury.

Dereck June 28th, 2004, 02:38 PM derek, are you gonna nix the smog system and up the compression on that 400 or leave it stock?
Hi Pepsi
I am all spent out at the moment so i can't do much of anything. The smog system is still on the car but not working as the pump is siezed, allthough I have got a new EGR valve on order to try and cut down the pinging.
I am not sure about upping the compression it pings enough as it is, I have been toying with the idea of fitting a lumpier cam and 4 barrel carb to try and get some more go out of it, I also thought of trying some avgas in it to see if the pinging would subside.
I am not worried about keeping it stock, it's one of those cars that is far too good to scrap but not good enough to be a keeper.
Regards
Dereck
purelux June 28th, 2004, 11:13 PM does it have cats? If it has a fuel door too small for a leaded pump (size of a diesel nozel) then I wouldn't use lowlead or lead substitute. As the lead would clog the cats and if there is one the 02 sensor.
justcauz July 5th, 2004, 04:57 AM I fell in love with my first Lincoln it was a boat much like Dereck's then later in life I met this older gentileman that had one of every model built in '79 he had over a 10 of that year alone. and I thought they where the most magnificent car on the road.
I saw my first conti when a man I knew purchased it. I loved it then and when he opted to sell it I jumped at the chance. found three more and own them as well.
I cought the bug and I got it bad.
indust82 July 30th, 2004, 05:01 PM I wanted to chime in on the part of the thread about the v6 continental. I unfortunately owned a 90 continental for a couple of years. I suppose there are good and bad...mine was bad. It looked good, but I put more money just keeping it on the road than I paid for the car. The pricey things were the front suspension (2500 at the dealer) back suspension (I replaced with reg. struts (1300) and I had to have the heads redone (1200). I really liked the look of the car, but looking it back it wasn't worth it. And to to add insult to injury.....I think it could possibly be the slowest lincoln ever made 140bhp.
Needless to say I wasn't deterred enough to stay away from the lincolns cuz now I have a mark 8 ( with exactly double the horses ) And to close, I must agree with many of u in that the 64 drop top convertable conti is my dream car.........and she will be mine........eventually.
pepperman November 2nd, 2004, 07:02 PM I bought my first Continental today and so far it is going fairly good it's a 1990.

WWJD November 6th, 2004, 07:51 PM I have a `87 conti since`94 that I love It has 16" epic chrome rims. The ride is addictive and it handles pretty good too . I added a`98 lsc last year. Both are here to stay. Fox body conti`s are becoming rare
Randeaux November 6th, 2004, 08:16 PM I had a '94 Signature series in Red/Red/RED! fully loaded with a sunroof and all!
I loved it like crazy! (I had to, I had to do a lot of work on her, myself { switched from air-ride to shocks, 2 oil pumps, a radiator, overhauled entire brake system, electrical issues, and so-on) Something about it though, I didn't mind always fixing her though.
She was a very sensual car to look at and drive. Unfortunately, I owed my Father a debt when I gave her to him so he could get a sizable loyalty rebate when he got his Grand Marquis in'03.( He got something like $4500 for it and it had 130K on the clock as a trade.) I miss my '94 Conti like crazy.(Btw, that was called even on the debt, even though somebody fared out $2500 better than was "sacrificed" earlier.{LOL}.)
(Not to mention somebody's Mercury will be paid-off next month, too!)(POPS! I love you anyways! ;) )
nineball481 November 7th, 2004, 08:47 AM Well I own a 76 Conti Mark IV. I use to have a Bill Blass Designer of the same year. I love both the cars. They are always reliable, and it seems to me that these cars were built with a little more care.

I would like to know why you decided to own a Continental?
I am the proud owner of three Conti’s and I love something about each one.
:W
I have had a "craze" for Continentals since I was kid.
I remember my next door neighbor's continental the day I first saw it.
It was a 59 MKIV convertible and I was really taken by it's size and design.
Even at i5, I knew some day I would own one.
Years went by , as well as countless other cars from Cadillacs to t-birds to Mustangs.
I have had them all.
The dream of the 59 convertible vanished in time.
When the 77 Continental mkv came out, again, It was love at first sight.
I spent the next couple of years dreaming of the day I could have my own.
When I finally did get one, it was in 1981 and it was the 1978 limited edition, Diamond Jubilee.
I have had that car ever since and today it is as good looking and running as it was the day I bought it.
Once I became computer savy and started visiting classic car sites, the old dream of the 59 convertible was rekindled.
Last year for Christmas, I gave myself one very restorable 59 convertibe as a present.
I have done alot to it in the past year and I am so proud of it.
Soon I will be posting pictures of it on this site.
More than likely within the next few hours or days.
I am gald to be the newest member of this site and hope to be "talking" with lots of new online friends.
Pepsi2185 November 23rd, 2004, 03:15 AM Alright Bob!!!!!! I feel the same way about my 96 that i want. 69 mark III also makes me very happy. Make sure you bring that bad boy to our meets this summer. I especially like the rare 59 mark. The country/city option on the radio is pretty cool. I saw a black one at a car show this summer and was taken with it.
Welcome, and enjoy the site!!!!

i get better gas mileage out of my 97 mark than i did my 90 conti....the car was just too heavy for that weak 6. Am I wrong? was my conti getting unusally bad milage?
crazyman December 10th, 2004, 06:43 PM Well, i dunno, I'm compairing it to an 89 Towncar with well over 200k.The Conti doesn't exactly get mind blowing mileage, but its not bad.I guess "good mileage"
is very much relative.

Vitas December 16th, 2004, 06:55 PM A Continental, because of the distinct ride, and of course, the Continental style.
In the ‘60’s a Lincoln had a hood that stretched out horizontally from the driver, while Cadillac had a hood that pointed down from the driver into the road. The Lincoln seemed to have a very comfortable cruise feel to it, sort of floating down the road. It was also very precise; you could take your hands off the steering wheel at 80 MPH and it would go straight as an arrow. You could drive it all day, 16 hours, and you didn’t get fatigued.
Someone was advertising used 1969 Lincolns in the NY Times as an American Grand Tourismo machine somewhere around 1972. That was a very accurate description of the car, which had the new computer designed 460 engine.
The somewhat “boxy” design made driving such a large car a snap; you could see every corner of the car, front and rear, making it very easy to park, or otherwise maneuver. Because of Cadillac’s rounded corners, it was a bit more difficult. Cadillac had a different road feel to it.
Drive an older Continental today, and people constantly ask you, what year is that Continental, or is that a Continental, etc. The history of the car is impressive. Named after a great American President.
Here is the first Lincoln Continental, custom built for Edsel Ford, an art rendering at The Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach:

97 Ivory Pearl VIII January 4th, 2005, 04:12 PM I have owned 4 Lincolns over the years. My first was a '73 4-door with the monster 460 V8. A real floater on the highway, and surprisingly quick at the stoplight for a 5000+ lb. car. My second was a '80 Continental Mark VI 4-door. Underpowered with a 302 V8, it still rode great. Third and probably my favorite was a '95 Continental. Strong V8, front wheel drive, hands down the best car I ever owned for driving in the snow. I'd set the ride to "plush" which gave more ground clearance, and I could drive through snow that came up over the rocker panels. My present Lincoln, a '97 Mark VIII is definately the fastest of the bunch. Not a muscle car, but darn close considering the size and weight.
The '95 Continental just seemed to fit all of the things I wanted at the time. Four doors, nice sounding V8 under WOT, 4-wheel air suspension, bells & whistles (the holographic gauges were so COOL!) and a decent sized trunk for our family of three. I still miss it during the winter and sometimes kick around the idea of finding another one.

liam6 January 26th, 2005, 06:57 PM Hey does anyone have an early 80s Conti? I have an '81 Mark VI and I was wondering what mods I could give it. I was thinking posi, but does anyone have any suggestions (keep in mind I'm on a budget)

joe62lincoln February 25th, 2005, 10:08 PM Just brought one home over the w/e. Runs but needs work. The ride is SMOOOTTTTTH and it's already bringing my neighbors over.
78_TownCar_460 February 27th, 2005, 03:08 PM I bought my continental because it had the town car option package. It is boxy, but I don't care, I like the concealed, vacuum assisted headlights and I like everything about the car. It is so much different then other cars I have owned.
Why would you put limited slip into a mark VI? For burnouts? I doubt that cars engine (if original) could supply enough power to two spinning wheels.

lincolnlarry March 9th, 2005, 09:25 PM I've only been a member for a short time, but Barry, you're full of B.S. Yes, the '56/'57 Continental was made by Continental Division. It was an awesome car in its day...still is! However, it has the 368 Lincoln engine (pulled from the line and balanced, though) and the same transmission as the Lincolns. The original (Mark I) was the Lincoln ZEPHYR Continental of 1940, based on Edsel's custom '39 model. Not widely known is that two others were built, one for Henry II, the other for his brother, Benson. Younger brother, William Clay, headed Continental Division. Ironically, the division headquarters building became headquarters for EDSEL. It is said when Edsel's widow was told they were naming the new "E" car after him, she closed the door in their faces.

You MUST be talking about my car! I've loved and pampered it for the last 3 years and 40k - but everything is on the fritz. Front air shocks are gone, head is f-ed up (leaves cute little puddles of "hot chocolate" everywhere - you know, a tasty mix of coolant and oil), digital dash is on the blink (literally), automatic climate control is flaky.
OTHER THAN THAT... I LOVE IT! LOL
I'm 19 and this was my first car - grandma gave it to me. I can remember back when I must have been about 10 years old - my grandfather always had one and as a kid I was in love with his cars (he used to always take me to the horse races). He had a 77 Mark, an 85 Town Car, and now a 92 Town Car which is just cherry - he bought it in 2002 with only 23k on it! He bought grandma a white 98 Sing. Conti and I got her 92. When I got it it has just clicked over to 100k and they had done LOTS of work to it! When I got it I continuted with the endless repairs and even got ambitious and added a gold kit (24k gold plated grill, emblems, hood orniment, trunk latch) it was a real sharp car - the gold went great with the deep emerald jewel paint.
The car sits in my drive way now - front fenders resting on tires - its a pathetic site. I'm currently car shopping... not just car shopping... Lincoln shopping. Yes... Lincoln shopping. So I guess even with all I went though - I don't want to drive anything else. I'm currently in the market for a 93+ Mark, 92+ TC (although a 94 would be ideal), or 95-97 Conti.
I'm currently eyeing a beautiful loaded white 93 Jack Nickclaus TC at the local Linc./Merc. dealer - one owner, just 93k on her, and also a 96 Conti with 106k from a private individual.
Wish me luck!

bradyelich April 30th, 2008, 07:35 PM I bought my 1997 Continental after my 1990 98 Olds Regency was stolen. I did my research on Edmunds.com and it said the long term reliability was above average. I like the power and the handling and the ride and fuel economy. I paid $6700 CN and the average retail price was &10,000 in my location. I have replaced many steering/driving parts and am fixing up the interior. I have $4000 to $5000 so far into the parts/service. I am treating this car as my hotrod and plan on keeping it. I will donate it to our local museum to sit beside their 1973 Continental.

pokeeto2 April 30th, 2008, 08:49 PM I've driven and had so many Continentals from 95 to 2001.
I love these cars. But everyone of them have different character.
One feels more powerful, another may run smoother, one may run tighter, and another may have a louder exhaust growl.
earlfleetwood May 2nd, 2008, 01:52 AM I had a 1979 Mark V. I loved the outside of the car, it was stunning. I however, hated the inside. Cadillacs of that day were much more stylish inside. I now own a 2001, and I love the inside, and not sure about the curvy outside yet. On the other hand, I have owned about 15 cadillacs. I am finding that as the years go by, I am preferring never lincolns to caddys. My love for cadillacs really ended in 1991 and that is really where I pick up lincolns!!
aaronearles May 3rd, 2008, 10:09 AM because i got a 98 for trading a laptop, otherwise, I would not have ever chosen a continental, but it's growing on me.
