I change my oil......that filter is a bit*h to get out btw. Anyway, since then there has been a major leak near where the filter is. Idk if i bumped something or what, but before i screwed with the filter, there was no leak. Any thoughts? I can't see very well up there and my jack sucks, so it's hard for me to see under there, and i wont turn the car on and move it anymore because i've messed up the driveway enough. :Bang :slam

It could be either:

The filter-to-block adapter gasket.

or

The oil sender unit.

I've had both go on other 4.6 vehicles, and they are a common occurance. They are an easy fix for well under $50...

I was just thinking about that, b/c several years ago Valvoline Instant Oil Chg did that very thing to me, and it seized up my engine (on a Chevy Lumina).

Luckily I won in small claims court and they had to buy me an engine.

Ithink he means the old gasket stayed on the car and the new filter has its own gasket. 2 gaskets will leak like crazy. Been there done that. Messy but an easy cheap fix.

i checked that, i took off the new one, checked the old one in the trash, only one ring was present at all. IDK what's going on, i mean, it was ok before i screwed with it. It's kinda embarrasing because all of my friends know me and a fairly car savy guy and to have something stupid like this to happen to me is embarassing. IDK what to do. this was the most dificult oil change ever and i screwed it up :slam

Take it in to get done by a mechanic. It's not worth the headache. Should run $130 in labor.

I feel pretty good now!! cause if I can do this to my car in 2 hours with hand tools I must still be a pretty good mechanic!! LOL!

Another potential for leakage is around the the oil pressure switch and the threaded plug. Be carefull how much you torque those, I split the aluminum boss on mine! The car sits while I find a new one.

so i did turn out to be the oil filter adapter gasket. this homo changed it all by himself, my grandpa told me what to pick up, cost like 7 bux, used a long series of extentions and went in from behind the tire because there is no other way, stuck the sucker in one of the very small holes, jammed a light bulb up in there and went at it. the old gasket slipped right out but getting the new one in properly we a diferent story.

first off.... u did it yourself?!?!

we bring our own oil and oil filter to a shop here and they only charge for labor... which is about $10. and they always give our car to the new guy (since they say its the hardest car to change a filter on). u'll be entertained for atleast 30 minutes by the service guy.... just about the amount of time it takes for u to even get ur hand up to the filter :p

you should have done a search, I posted a thread when I did mine on how to do the whole job step by step, and how to place the gasket. good job! at least you figured it out. NO more leaky!!!!:D
