SEOUL, June 22 (UPI) -- Seoul's foreign minister Tuesday appealed on the Arab
satellite TV network al-Jazeera for the safe release of a South Korean hostage.
Ban Ki-moon hopes to use his rare interview with the Qatar-based satellite
broadcaster as a channel to win the release of Kim Sun-il, who was taken
hostage by an Islamic militant group in Iraq last week.
"South Koreans are a friend of Iraqi people," Ban was quoted as saying by his
spokesman. "There is no reason why Kim is kidnapped. The whole county is in
shock over the news on the hostage-taking of an innocent civilian."
In a half-hour interview, Ban repeatedly called for the immediate and
unconditional release of the hostage to maintain close ties between South Korea
and Iraq.
"I want this message to be conveyed immediately to the whole Arab world," he
said.
South Korean news media reported Kim was alive and detained in Fallujah where
he was kidnapped Thursday.
