Shifting?

As I am new to the Marks and and this class of automobile, and just rescently purchased a 1993 Mark VIII (on a whim  ).

I was reading a thread about manually shifting. What was left out was or what I was not clear on is - Would manual shifting be bad for the transmission?

When should you shift manually and when should you let the auto - do it for you? :F

I am not a gear head no offense meant, but I am learning more. Thought I would let those who have more experience tell me the ins and outs of when to shift manually. :feed

Hope I don't sound to stupid

Just never had a car in this class before. :L

Maunally shift it when you are drag racing like so http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/joey/Dragpass14.8.wmv

At what RPMs do you want to shift for best preformance?

I would be very careful with your '93. The trans does not like manually doing the 1-2 up shift and especially doesn't like doing the 4-2 and 2-1 downshift. I would leave it in drive. I have yet to see a timeslip from anybody that got more performance out of manually shifting the car.
