I read that you're supposed to have a special tool for removing the fuel filter. I'm right in the middle of it and stuck. What do I do? Can I do this without the tool?

They say you can use a pen cap to remove it, I tried and it did not work, borrowed the correct tool from a neighbor.

I have yet to pull the fuel filter on my car, but from what I have read you can simply cut the upper portion of the fuel filter with some tin snips and leave a small portion of the filter in the clip on the top of the filter. Then you can push the filter down into the lower half and it supposedly pulls right out. To remove the top portion that you cut you can use a ballpoint pen cap that will fit into the uper clip and the pen cap will release the upper portion of the filter. Just make sure to remove the lil 'clip' that is normally on pen caps or this trick will not work.

I went to autozone and bought a tool for $6.00. No big deal since I live about 2 min from autozone. All done. I guess I won't need that tool for another 5 years. :give

Oh, I drilled my airbox and removed my air silencer at the same time today. Can't wait to try the car out!

Looks like the same set up on EFI mustangs and most other EFI Fords.

Well, I got stuck b/c a tech article from Lincolns Online neglected to mention the fuel filter tool. I had to run out and get one. The filter won't disengage from the upper hose unless the retainer on the inside is pressed upward on all sides by a 5/16 tool. You might want to amend your article for Gen 1's.

Gen I's are different, they use the same type of retainer as the AC lines.

Gen 2's are different than Gen 1's. They fixed their slipup with the Gen 2's.....with a few exceptions.... :Beer

No biggie......I read that on another website, along with the directions on what to do. Just like the 98 tranny is the best tranny out of all the Mark VIII's....they updated it with better parts. :Beer

If not just go get the tool..

They are little plastic inserts that you have to push into the top fitting and then pull the filter out.

It may take a few tries but once you master the art you've got it.

Tool cost about $10 if that!
