I recieved the following message through my chain of command. It has been paraphrased for security reasons.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
THREAT TO MILITARY FUNERALS

----------- IS TRANSMITTING THIS FP ADVISORY BASED ON RECENT REPORTS OF PROTEST GROUP ACTIVITIES TO PICKET MILITARY FUNERALS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.

A GROUP FROM ---------------------- LOCATED IN --------------- HAS PROTESTED AND IS PLANNING TO PICKET AND PROTEST AT PUBLIC FUNERALS OF PERSONNEL KILLED IN THE WAR ON TERRORISM. THIS GROUP HAS REPORTEDLY ANNOUNCED VIA THEIR WEBSITE THAT THEY INTEND TO PROTEST FUNERALS IN ALABAMA, CALIFORNIA, DELAWARE, IOWA, IDAHO, ILLINOIS, KANSAS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, NEW YORK, PENNSYLVANIA, WISCONSIN, AND WEST VIRGINIA.

THERE IS NO INFORMATION TO INDICATE THAT THIS GROUP PLANS ANY FORM OF VIOLENT ACTIVITY AND THEY ARE NOT KNOWN TO INITIATE PHYSICAL CONTACT. HOWEVER, THIS GROUP DOES EMPLOY PASSIVE-AGGRESSIVE TECHNIQUES INTENDED TO PROVOKE A HOSTILE RESPONSE OR OFFENSIVE REACTION FROM OTHERS. THEY WILL EMPLOY WRITTEN AND VERBAL INFLAMMATORY LANGUAGE AGAINST THE DECEASED PERSON, THEIR FAMILY, AND MILITARY PERSONNEL TO ELICIT DESIRED RESPONSES. THIS GROUP WILL THEN FILE A CIVIL ACTION IN AN EFFORT TO REACH A SETTLEMENT IN ORDER TO FUND FUTURE ACTIVITIES.

DO NOT PERSONALLY ENGAGE PROTESTORS IN ANY WAY; VERBALLY OR PHYSICALLY.

ALLOW CIVILIAN AUTHORITIES TO ADDRESS ANY INFLAMMATORY SITUATIONS OR EFFORTS TO IMPEDE THE FUNERAL PROCESSIONAL.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

.........I don't even know how to respond to this...

Yes, I'm afraid it's true. It's already happened in my region. Some whacko church (from Kansas, nonetheless) came here to protest at the funeral of a miltary soldier killed in Iraq. Their rationale for his death was that god is killing our soldiers overseas because the United States is allowing gay lifestyles and marriages to prevail.

I was outraged. I was going to go down there to help half of New England kick their asses, but our local talk shows urged people to stay away and not add to the circus atmoshphere, and to have respect for the family. So, out of respect I complied and stayed home. Besides, I heard down at the bar that our friendly neighborhood Hell's Angel's may be down there to "pay their respects" anyway :gr_devil:

Fortunately for the family, things didn't go badly. The jesus-freaks did their little protest, but the local police and other people kept them far away from the funeral site. It wasn't as bad as everyone thought it would turn-out. I was expexting (and hoping) for a riot and those loonies would wind-up in body bags. I hate these people...

That sucks. This is what happens when religious self-rightiousness goes bad.

That's probably the same "church" that came here to protest some play that had one of the characters that was gay. Whatever, this is a free country, but save the protests for the courthouse lawn, not a funeral. That's just friggin disrespectful.
