Who makes 3.73 gears for towncars? Or at least which ones will fit?

Posted by: evillally

Ford Racing, Summit, and many other no-name brands. Any 8.8 inch will fit...

Posted by: 91lincTownEx

8.8 ok, Thanks!

Ok. On ebay there are many 3.73 8.8's but they say 5.0 mustang, ranger, bronco, and others. Does this matter? I wouldnt thank it would but just asking. Dont want to get the wrong ones.

Posted by: evillally

They will fit. Just remember any 8.8 inch.

Would I have to worry any about my tranny or driveshaft?

Posted by: gadget73

No. You're just using the gears. I'd also reccomend installing a trac-loc unit with the new gears so you get traction on both tires instead of just one. Towncar should be a 28 spline unit.

You should get a shift kit and tranny cooler to protect the tranny. If you experience shaking because of the driveshaft, you can always swap the mmx from a Police Interceptor, which is better rated for speed and vibration...

Im sorry to bother but, what is a "MMX" and what kind of shift kit?

Posted by: evillally

Metal matrix composite. It's an aluminum product and is very lightweight...

Posted by: Geezer

Buy from someone who will guarantee them. Beware of ebay! Summit has an excellent rep as does Ford Racing.

And AMMC or Aluminum p71 driveshaft won't work on a Town Car, it is 3" too short.

Also, the AMMC was only equipped for 2000 CVPIs, which like all 95+ used the 4r70w (and in later years it's successors) which uses a different spline count on trans yoke and will not work in his '91s AOD transmission.

The gear set is a M-4209-F373N and has a list of 179.95 and LVC is $144.00, the install kit is a M-4210-C includes all brgs and seals for a list of 120.00 and LVC at $102.00 the trac loc unit is a M-4204-F288 and lists for $215.00 and LVC $192.00.

Oh, I just noticed I made a slight mistake.
The spline count is the same as 95+, it's the outer diameter of the yoke that is different.

Does the driveshaft need to be replaced on a TC with 373's?

No you just have to raise the spending limit on your gas card

Sixlitre

My gas is free so that is not my concern. I don't want to put in 3.55's and be disappointed when 3.73's are really the way to go. I do not want to replace the driveshaft though.

I have been thinking of switching out the gears on my Town Car as well. How much of a gas mileage loss will be seen when going to 3:73 or going a bit lighter to 3:55's from the 2:9 or 3:1 or whatever is in there right now. And with the trac-loc mentioned earlier will that give me the ability to do a burnout with both rear tires instead of one, assuming that 210hp is enough to do so with twice that traction, but I think it will because 1 tire breaks so quickly with a brake stand. Anyways so any answers would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and the shift kit is good, but is the tranny cooler needed? My buddy just put a shift kit on his auto mustang and it really kicks now but he didn't do any tranny cooling stuff just had it flushed when they did the kit install.
