stupid exhaust shops!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I took this morning to see if I could get a cheaper estimate for my custom exhaust system that i'm doing and sure enough there was one guy who argued with me that it was against the law to cut the 3rd cat and resonator off........I told him that he's not reading the laws very well because every other exhaust place in the city had no problems with it because u only need 1 cat per muffler and I'm still keeping the front 2 cats on, but he wouldn't listen. Man ignorant people drive me insane! The cheapest estimate I got besided the one that I'm going to was $500, but the place I'm getting it done for $420(tax included)is a very well-known exhaust place that does great work, so I'm taking it there either next saturday or the Saturday afterwards. I'll have complete video and sound clips of the exhaust system ASAP for you guys.

I don't know if anybody ever figured out exactly what the "third cat" is (not the resonator), but after the guy took mine off, he said he was sure that it was something that should not have been removed.

The manual calls it a "Y-pipe Converter". I passed emissions without it twice, and IMHO, it's just a pipe that converts two tubes to one.

I see a lot of you guys have "drilled air intake" listed as a mod. What does this mean? Anyone have a picture?

Heres what the assembly line MVMA Bible says about the exhaust.

Its basically a waste of electricity and does zero in the HP department. just a slightly louder sound from the intake. If your going to do it, do it right imho.

here's a link to it. It's worth it in my opinon. Of course any "free mod" is worth it to me

Removing the silencer, resonator and drilling out the air box gives you a nice growl from 3000-6000rpm, especially in 2nd gear when you can really feel the pull of that DOHC motor. Now your Mark VIII will growl with authority when you step on the gas!

Removing the silencer does far more then drilling the intake.

this is true, I was talking about the entire process of removing the silencer, capping off, and drilling the intake, that whole setup was worth it and I did it all at once, which I highly recommend

I''ll take mine back to the track and see if it's any faster, which I doubt since I capped off the resonator, drilled the box and removed the silencer. I am guessing it maybe freed up 2-3 flywheel hp, nothing I can notice..

I have seen 2hp on the dyno with a 96 GT Mustang. SO it should be comperable.

But doesn't it bring cooler air into the intake?

Not really, all your doing is drilling holes that suck air out of the hot engine compartment. Your better off getting geno's cold air kit, or fabbing one up yourself (if thats your thing).

that seems alittle high!

well yeah of course it's better, but lets see:
genos kit=$300+
making your own=free,
hmmmmm which one should I choose

Posted by: 94m5

I'm not trying to say you should buy one, but Geno has done the research, and put the time into it. That is worth the price he is asking. I was only saying that you could make it yourself, because I am one of those types of guys. I LOVE doing everything myself.

Some people don't have the shop space, nor the time to do it. My .02$

I wish I could make stuff myself. I'm about as mechanically-inclined as a 3 year old girl. I basically had to take every car I owned to one of my friends to get work done on it, it's pretty pathetic
