Small Oil Leak

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: GMAN

I don't drive my Mark every day (for obvious reasons $2.26 per gallon). But anyway, When I start my car after not driving it for three to four days, I get a little oil leak, then it seals itself up. I've read somewhere here about an oil filter adapter. Is this correct? Can someone give me some insight on this? How much would this cost to repair? Is this something I can do? I would like to get this taken care of.

... I hadn't moved my car for about 2 days until this morning... and yeah, I had an oil leak... it's a trip how I was going to ask the same as you...

When my oil filter adapter gasket went, the oil would only end up leaking on start-up. But if you let the car sit overnight it wouldn't drip a single drop. The gasket itself is pretty cheap at I believe 12 bucks from the dealer; and the installation wasn't too bad, as long as you have about a foot of extensions for your ratchet. If you were to get it installed I think I've read that it cost in the neigborhood of 150. Good luck.

It's probably you oil sender unit; that's a common nuisance on all 4.6 engines. I replaced it on every 4.6 I've owned. It's a cheap fix; $30 in parts, $50 in labor if you pay someone to do it for you...

Well, if you figure out its the adapter plate gasket here are some links. Oh ya, make sure to drain the coolant before you start; which can be saved. On the link with the pics, the 4th pic down in the left column is priceless.
