Why do liberals pursue agendas that will ultimately destroy themselves if successful?

A recent book claims that the explanation is that liberalism is a (dangerous) mental disorder. What do you think?

Anyone who champions a cause such as radical islam that makes no bones about the fact that its goal is to destroy you obviously has some mental short commings.
