"clicking" noise

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Lately my 96 has been making a noise from the engine. The only way I can describe it is a constant clicking noise. I don't notice it while I'm driving, but when I pull up alongside other cars or something to reflect the noise, I can clearly hear it. Does anyone have any ideas? Also the noise is pretty constant, it seems like it is related to RPM meaning that when the engine revs it speeds up.

what kind of fuel are you useing? could be an exhaust leak? dose it do it when its cold or hot?

Posted by: rmac694203

come to think of it when I first start it cold it doesn't really do it, but after the car warms up it does it. I use only 91-93 octane.

had any work done recently?

Posted by: 67Continental

sounds like either an exhaust leak, or a valve.

I have not had any work done to the engine, but I bought the car at the end of January. The only work I have had done is lower ball joint, rack and pinion, and brakes. I don't know if it has always made this noise, but I just noticed it a few weeks ago. Now it is also starting to make a squealing noise (not very loud though). I assume this is from the belt, but I'm not sure. Is there a good way to pinpoint that?

The squeeking noise maybe the belt or tensioner, maybe the idler pulley. You have to figure out where it's coming from with the hood open and the car running.

Upon listening to this "clicking noise" more I found a better way to describe it. It sounds like when you stick a piece of paper into a fan. Like I said I only notice the sound when I'm driving alongside another car or a wall or something, but it irritates me. Any suggestions?

when you rev the car slowly in neutral does the clicking frequency increase with the rpms? well, until the exhaust/engine noise drowns it out anyways? i have this too. it's more like a "ticking." i noticed it at the dealership when i bought it and i still have it till this day. people tell me it's the injectors and it's nothing to worry about. the valvetrain in our v8's are very complex, and sometimes a little noisy. you may want to try a bottle of injector cleaner. it did nothing for me but it may do something for you.

Posted by: rmac694203

yeah that's pretty much exactly what happens. I'll try some injector cleaner, can't hurt anything. I figured it wasn't anything to be worried about, it's just kind of annoying. Thanks for the input.

Hell yeah it's annoying. It used to bother me but not anymore. I'm self concious about it because once I left my friends in my car when I ran into my house for a second, and when I came back they were like "I think your engine is knocking." Now, in no way does it sound like an engine knock, but it was the only way they could describe it. I didn't want people saying my engine was knocking. Not that they ever heard an engine knock anyways. It was at night time, very quiet, and I had the radio turned off cause I just got off my cell phone, so that's why they heard it. Now I leave my radio on.

Yeah I think that between my subs and radio I pretty much drown it out most of the time, but I still hear it from time to time and it upsets me.

The injectors will tick also. Very loudly with mileage.

Posted by: rmac694203

Yeah, my 96 has nearly 114,000. Is it anything to worry about or is it just the injectors getting a little noisy?
