Mark VII Running again

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hey all,

well after 2 months my Mark VII is running again. After standing close to seawater for 2 and a half straight years, I finally managed to get the engine up and running. It just has 40000 miles on it. (No not 140000 miles)

In the process I have come across a few mysteries.

1. After reattaching everything there's this one bracket that absolutely mystifies me as to it's correct location. It's a U-shaped bracket that I'm sure attaches somewhere on the accessory drive. Somewhere in between the AC compressor and the alternator. The bracket looks like this I
I_____I
Both ends have a hole in it to insert a bolt and attach it. I just can't find a place to attach it.

2. What really has me scared......after opening the rear oil drain plug, about 15 oz. of pure water came gushing out before oil finally started pouring. I know that in case of gasket leaks that water only gets to the combustion chamber. But being that the engine didn't run for more than 2 years, and because of the fact that we were really amateurs in removing the manifold etc, I'm hoping that that water was more because of our inexperience than a cracked block or water jacket or something. This car I think never made it past 100 mph. It was driven by an old chap now and then before he sold it.

Any of you know where that bracket goes? And shed some light on the water in the oil pan?

Welcome.

I'd have to see a picture of the bracket. It sounds like the hellifino bar.

If the first liquid drained out clear, then it could be coolant water but the coolant water would have had to of been almost 100 percent water. If the PCV valve is missing and the car was hit with a fire hose on a weekly basis then that could be the source. Other than those two, I cannot see why you would get water out of the crankcase.

Weird things can happen, but how's it runnin now?

Oh man, you should hear her growl. I think I figured out why there was water in there. See, were still amateurs when it comes to amercian cars. Did some light DIY on my GTI VR6 but nothing with distributors. When removing the lower manifold. We found out the you have to remove the dizzy. Of course we didn't have the correct socket size to hand crank her into 1 TDC so we tried cranking it.........with the lower manifold still loose. That did the trick I think. The oil was black and the water pretty clear.
When we first started her up, you had to pump the gas to rev the engine. It was really crappy. We removed both manifolds, replaced the gaskets and spark plugs, cleaned the injectors, flushed the radiator and changed the oil. I also took a chance to sand down and clean the manifolds. This is how she looks now. By the way. That's the bracket on top of the firewall. Maybe someone can tell me the two attaching points of that bracket. Or maybe draw and repost this picure.

Many thanks !
