Getting Remote Start, Need insight

Firstly......... I don't drive an LS

but since this forum has a better chance of answering my question I've decided to post it here. Now, my parents are getting me a Remote Starter for my Continental as a 22nd Birthday Present and I've been given the task of finding out which is the best product (Price Wise) and the pros and cons of the system. I know a lot of you guys have them so I'd be curious as to your take on it?

Get A Viper Alarm, Auto start, and 1 mile range, i Love mine makes me feel safe.

I got the Viper 791 alarm with remote start at 500ft. Man I love this alarm but ever since i've had it installed, I have this problem with it going on off sometimes after I arm the car. Sometimes it will go off by itself without anyone touching it and the remote will beep, (I hate that sh#t in the middle of the night). Other than that, I love the alarm but just need to find out what's making it go off like that.

I installed the viper alarm/remote starts for 5 years, we switched to code alarm and after a season went back to viper. As far as installation goes the viper products in my opinion are the easiest to install and operate. I also have the 791 with the 2 way remote and love it. I don't have any problems out of it at all.

If you aren't wanting a remote start/alarm combo I would suggest the Valet remote starts which is made by the same company as viper as well as a handful of other products by DEI. I would suggest the valet remote start over any other brand.

The one thing to keep in mind is you will need a bypass piece if you plan to put this on almost any vehicle these days. There are few that don't have a chip built into the key which the remote start will have to have added on so the vehicle will start. In some cases this will require you to lose one of the keys that starts the vehicle (can be the valet key) so if you have one key you will need to goto the dealer to get another one made. If you already have 2 keys simply buy another key online and have someone cut it for you and the steps to program a 3rd key are easy, this depends on the make and model. I've seen different bypass pieces go from 25 on up towards 100 dollars and that will be added onto the price of the remote start.

I don't know how much they are willing to spend, but you will fall in love with it. I find it hard to own a vehicle without one on it now.

The factory alarm will work until the vehicle is started at which point the factory alarm will be disabled to allow the car to start.

I myself wouldn't put much faith in teh factory alarm if you are worried about theft though.

go with DEI I got the viper alarm with a mile range and remote start love it

dont go anywhere near Code Alarm I got one on my truck with the two way and all that remote stopped working after like two months and the alarm goes off all the time for no reason spent over $400 for crap

my shop only installs DEI systems (viper, python, sidewinder...) as said they are the best designed system the easiest to install and have the best warranty, i also would not put any faith into what ford calls a factory alarm.

viper models i would choose from
160XV -remote start, keyless entry, panic, two remotes, 500' est range, trunk pop optional (no alarm)

160XVL -same as above with up to 1 mile range

771XV -remote start, keyless entry w/ panic, trunk pop optional, alarm with two stage shock sensor one remote with 2 way 500' est range and led's to confirm start or alarm

791XV same as above but with a 2 way LCD remote, discontuned and replaced with the 1 mile 5900

5900 -2 way LCD 1mile range remote R/s, alarm w/ dual stage shock sensor, keyless w/panic, trunk optional,

responder LE - new system with very small and thin 1000' range remotes w/ LED's

by the way if you conti is a 98 or newer expect to spend an extra $100 - $150 over the regular price to bypass the PATS (chip in keys) and you will have to have at least 2 keys for them to program the bypass to the car

I had Cliford and Valet remote start combo. My bypass was $50 and the range sucked only due to the fact of the tint. The Valet system was nice, but if you want to have the remote start and the factory alarm you'll end up with two seperate remotes. You cant tie in factory alarm fob with the remote start fob.

with the LS, you can get one remote as long as the R/S has keyless too, just tap your lock and unlock wires between the wires comming off the drivers door lock cylinder and the drivers door module this will make the car think that it was locked with the key, and it will arm the factory alarm, also doing this will allow the car to roll up and down the windows without putting a window module in as long as you can set the system to continue the signal as long as the button is held down(kinda like the factory remote+ roll up). or if you use a DEI system there is a activation wire that you can tap into the lock wire and program it to 3 pulses then when you press the lock button on the factory remote 3 times it will activate the R/S and you will hear the horn honk twice so you know that the car got the signal.
