How to retreive error codes

I have a 96 Eldorado, by far the worst car I have ever owned and will keep you broke with repairs. A subject that would take half the day to discuss and now it needs a starter.

All of that aside. The check engine light has been coming on and off for a while and now it seems to be permanently on. I know there is a way to query the system to find out what the codes are, can anyone give me instructions how to do that. Once I get the codes, how do you find out what they mean?
