new cold air install...
idle sound clip...
filter in fender...
hole not cut completely...
Posted by: NHLSV8
ehhhhh nice positioning.... why the stock tubing with baffles? I'm sure there is a gain from what you did, but its just like an exhaust. To really see a difference you need to do the headers and cats. Looks and sounds good though
Posted by: JWerner2
Good work. You will want to do the rest of the plumbing for the intake sooner or later.
Why just a idle clip? That really don't show anything with the sound of the intake. You should at least give us a few revs.
Posted by: TDUB
How much was it for the tube?
Posted by: lincoln00
i spent 60 buck after buying the filter and tubing... I only did a idle clip because i did strait pipes and got new tips. it souds alot better the intake really dows make any noise... Atleast i can't hear it over the exhaust....
I just used 3 inch exhaust pipe. started with 2 feet with a 90 degree bend in the middle... then cut it to fit..
Posted by: JWerner2
What I would have done was bought the KKM or K&N adapter. They come with filters and you could have just used a coupler to hold the bent pipe you added to the adapter.
How is the pipe held to the MAF now?
Posted by: Dubbed_LS
I just Did mine wit a basic bent tube and shaped it to slide through that hole . but i a plan on re modifying it again. for optimal performance. but gas mileage is alot better with the CAI.
even with the 20''s i still get 23 - 25 mpg on the hwy. and in the city 17 - 19
but here is a picture ill take more pictures later.
Posted by: lincoln00
The pipe is mounted to the mass air with a mass air flange that i made...just like a adapter but welded strait to the pipe.... no couplers needed
the only thing i want to do different is make a pipe strait to the throttle body, then paint it all gloss black not flat...grabbed the wrong can in the garage LOL
Posted by: 00ls5spd
Some some money boss...just cut the baffle off the front of the stock intake tube....epoxy a piece of plastic off the baffle over the hole, and be done with it. no offense but your not going with a polished/show quality intake look, so go the cheaper route and use what you already have.
Posted by: BrklynExpress
Is there a general consensus on the best cai solution for V8's? Or should I just order the intake pip and the kkm from lskoncepts
Posted by: lincoln00
I like what i have done... I race a buddy of mine all the time... he has a RSX type S, since the cold air and muffler removal i have gain any where from a half a car to a car over what i was already beating him by... also since i have done the cold air i noticed better throttle response...
its a fun little project that you get a good gain from... to be honest i think your better off with the stock air box over the kkm... just for the fact that its a hot air intake...
I already have see two people on this forum talking about there car running crappy with that hot air intake in the summer... mine i have no problems and cant wait for winter

I want the tube that runs down into the fender will the one from auto zone work?
Posted by: lincoln00
not sure
Posted by: Dubbed_LS
the one from autozone will work.. u just kinda knock it outta that round shape into an oval like matter so it can fit into that slot. check out mine.
Posted by: JWerner2
You would rather make the hole larger then obstruct the flow.
TDUB, as long as it is the right diameter it will work fine. I think I am going out today to find some pipe and do mine.
lincoln00, sorry I couldnt tell. That weld looks like silicone sealant or something.
Posted by: Dubbed_LS
jwerner2 thanks for ruining my parade. hahah jk
but great point though. think i am goin to get a new tube and redo my set up!
Posted by: NHLSV8
the one from autozone? are you talking about the Spectre Flexible plastic tubing with the ridges? The same amount of cash will get you an already bent section of 3" exhaust tubing.... paint it.
as for show quality and such, I paid 20 to make mine... well 60 total but I've made 3 revisions to it. Mine looks FAR better than the ones you can buy or epoxying the stock and its not even dry yet. Get some filler primer, sand it and repeat. Then use a High Gloss as close to your cars color as you can get or black and do three light coats. Wet sand and recoat untill it is smooth like glass. Then clear coat it the same way you painted it. Buff with a polishing compound / scratch remover type of product. Watch the judges poop in thier pants at the quality of the custom fabrication. (welding and grinding are paramount dont use silicone couplers they look ricey)
Posted by: JWerner2
Exactly how do the couplers look ricey?
Its a coupler, it serves its purpose and what else are you supposed to use?
Not to be offensive but I would also like to see this one that looks so much better. I don't understand how much better it can get unless you go ahead and powder coat it ( I'm being honest and not trying to come off like a jerk ).
I do agree how ever that you should just go out and find some 3" stainless or unfinished metal pipe rather then those junker things.
Posted by: NHLSV8
weld the pipes together.... from the TB to the MAF is a small enough piece to install all in one. The LS is so gorgeous in its simplicity that the silicone couplers are way to busy and with varying colors to flashy! Flashy look at me color crap is what made the Fast and the Funniest possible!
just my .02 I posted a pic of the basic layout of mine. There are plenty of ideas in here that you can come up with what you like best.
edit: I forgot that pic was in a different thread. Here is mine before welding the other parts on, grinding, a painting
Posted by: JWerner2
Oh ok, then in that case I agree that if you are doing it section by section to many couplers can be to much but the two basic ones are needed to hold to the TB and to hold to the MAFS. Those have got to be a given.
Posted by: NHLSV8
Yup... those two are needed even though there are technically ways around it, but I would agree that couplers are needed. You could get pressure clamps that will have a better hold and look better.
Posted by: TDUB
No I'm not talking about the ridge ones from auto zone I'm talking about the metal intake tubes they sell
Posted by: JWerner2
Just get the 3" exhaust pipe and cut it down the other stuff is just as cheap.
I have looked at Auto Zone Advanced and a Mom and Pop store along with Lowe's and I haven't found anything in the proper diameter. I would hate to have to buy it online, that would just be annoying.
NHLS, what type of pressure clamps are you taking about. The silicone couplers help keep a good seal and are way more logical. Also if they are not done in excess which I cant really see that happening IMO they help some what dress the engine up if you ask me be it red blue or black couplers.
Posted by: TDUB
Exactly what diameter do we need?
Posted by: NHLSV8
I went to local parts store... they sell 3"OD exhaust tubing.... pre bent for you and everything. AZ I know sells piping as well, but I dont know about 3". Ask the guys behind the counter because stores tend to hide it in the back.
I've never heard fo or seen this metal intake stuff from AZ. But if its anything like exhaust piping, then it should be fine. The key is the smoothness of the inside. The plastic stuff I was tlaking about causes MASSIVE turbulence and is probably worse than most any stock intake tubing.
The Clamps I'm talking about are hard to describe.... they are a pice of sheet metal with two tbolts to create a seal. A version of them is used by the Navy to patch ruptured pipes..... thats how storng the seal is. The silicone ones are fine, infact thats what I'm sing. But two of them vise the several I've seen on here with 5 or 6. Color matching is key to dressing an engine. If you have the yellow accel coils, maybe yellow coulpers would work. Allot is personal preference. IMO this engine bay needs black.... and maybe some MINOR silver accents
Posted by: NHLSV8
when I get off my lazy arse and up load the pics.... I'll be able to better desrcibe what I'm talking about. If you want a real pro looking finish to this, you need to treat it like body work. get it built and ready to go, then really take your time and do the finish work right! I've listed a few things that would help and kept some to myself since I am starting a finishing company and that would be giving away tricks that make mine look better than others.
Posted by: NHLSV8
oh and get a dremmel with a sanding wheel and make your holes in the fender look better. If you are worried about making a show quality CAI, then make the installation show quality too! If its just a show where everyone looks and has a good time big deal. If its a judged competition, the attention to detail is EVERYTHING!!!!!!!! I spent 5 minutes painting the spare compartment of my trunk to show off the Nitrous bottle and the judges commented on it specifically!
I'm not trying to sound like a prick, I'm just throwing pointers out there for making these cars look that much better. They are IMO one fo the top 5 sexiest rides ever. They should be treated as such.
Posted by: JWerner2
The stuff from "AZ" is that cheap chrome coated stuff from Specter. I also don't think they have the right stuff that we need.
So far my car has Red and Silver. Red emblems and Red stuff pads with a Silver body so when I have my intake made I am going with Red couplers and hopefully silver pipework. My wheels are Silver and the center caps are already starting to show some wear so I am sending those out to LMS sometime to get the Lincoln Star done in Red with a color matching Silver background to them. I wanna paint my engine cover Silver along with the strut tower covers and do the trimming like the lines and the V8 LINCOLN in Red. Exactly like you say its about being color coded but also what parts are what colors. I plan on doing small stuff in Red and larger stuff in Silver.
Like I said I also agree on some of the in home produced intakes I have seen with a dozen couplers holding together PVC This is a luxury car and it does deserve something clean.
I did see something that caught my eyes last night that I thought looked nice at Lowe's. I saw couplers that were black but had a stainless steel sheet covering them. For some of you that might be something nice to consider.
I agree with the hole in the fender as well! lol! I was editing my post as you posted....AGAIN!
Posted by: NHLSV8
silver piping might be rough for ya. The welding and grinding it going to make polishing hard to do..... You could paint it silver.... in fact there are tons of arguments to doing it in the same color as your car. The other half of color coding is not to over do it. My colors (everything is one of these colors including my helmet and fire jacket) are black and silver. Silver is broad... you can get bare metal in there too. Where your engine bay is painted silver.... it already has tons of black and tons of silver. I would almost leave the red out of there. Use some good degreaser in there and get that silver bay shining like new..... cleaner wax works wonders in there. I'f been contemplating doing a massive remake of the engine bay plastics. They just dont look they way I want. Not sure what I'm going to do, but with the new CAI looking awesome, the rest needs to be made to match or atleast to the same level
Posted by: JWerner2
To late I made up my mind, to each his own and I think it will look great!
No offense but it seems as if you are giving biased opinions based on how your engine bay looks.
Of course I don't plan on polishing it I am actually debating on it being powder coated in Silver. I also don't plan on welding it, I am searching for a place that could just bend the tube and then of course weld in the nipples for the hose and the bracket to hold it in place.
I may add that not my entire emblem is Red, sorry. My emblem is silver with a red star giving some fine lines of accenting. Thats why I feel the small fine things in red will look good.
I also think with the all red taillights this will be a good way to go.
Posted by: NHLSV8
I actually did my last car (silver) with silver accents in the engine bay..... very quickly it became clear IMO that it gets over powering fast!
Not trying to sway your oppinion, just giving you other options. Oh and 3" piping is rough to find a bender for. Most places I've found that do exhaust can only bend up to 2.5" Best of luck though, you sound like you have good ideas!
Posted by: JWerner2
I found one place that said it could be done in one day and go for around $120 tops probably less but they don't do the coating. I'm waiting to see my schedule for the next few weeks till I make the appointment since they surely wont welcome walk ins and have many other big projects to do.
As far as the Silver, you see I'm not doing Silver accents I'm doing Red. The inside of the engine bay could use some polishing up but it is Silver like the body of the car. Its a bit duller but its still Silver so using Silver as a main color to focus on wont be bad in my opinion as long as the Red is kept under control. Honestly neither of us could predict the outcome we can only judge it when its done.
3" shouldn't be that hard, the ones from LSK are 3" and they are mandrel bent. They seem to sell allot of those, just some FYI.
But thanks for wishing luck! Its appreciated.
Posted by: NHLSV8
120 bucks! damn guy! Send me 50 and I'll make one for ya!!!! HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!! I hope that was for coating not bending and I read that wrong.
Posted by: JWerner2
No thats for bending and welding and thats cheap compared to the price they pay otherwise!
They doubt it will even cost that much. I have yet to show them the car and seeing how it is just a long tube with two bends they will probably drop that alot. You also have to consider this is a professional performance shop.
I called them and they told me they have not seen one yet for any car they did not get done in one day and would cost more than $120. I doubt this will take more than a half day and it is a very basic design to sum up my point.
Posted by: NHLSV8
I think mine cost 20 bucks..... I have fat bends though and a mandrel bender could possibly get some tighter bends. Definately keep me posted. I want to see this when its done. I'll get mine up here sooner or later. It'll probably be in my 6spd thread as part of the build.
Posted by: JWerner2
Will do, keep in mind the only reason why yours was so cheap was because the labor was in your own hands.
I honestly doubt it will cost more than 80$ nore will I pay much more than that.
Posted by: NHLSV8
thats very true.... but if you have a buddy that can weld.... the rest is very easy!!!!!!!!!!!!! 20 bucks and a six pack for your buddy is still better than 80-120 bucks. Either way, like I said before, sounds like you some good ideas. Call me if you wanna chat cars. I'm always willing to talk cars and these cars esp!!!

Posted by: JWerner2
Yeah that would help but one, I don't know anyone that welds and two I would rather just have a clean straight forward job by going with the bending and not worrying about the other stuff that needs to be done following welding.
Posted by: NHLSV8
understandable.... keep us posted

new pic after repaint and welding...
Posted by: JWerner2
Thats looking good. What did you use to cut the hole in the fender?
Posted by: TDUB
I'm going to buy the aluminum intake tube but I want to get a tube like the ones pictures so I can run it down into the fender to draw in the cooler air.
Posted by: NHLSV8
for those of you running the in fender cai, you may want to consider a water sock. I think they are like 20 bucks. K&N makes them as well as few other companies. They slide over the filter, dont restrict air flow on a N/A engine but protect your engine from sucking up water. Its not something you need, but I like to err on the safe side.

I used a dremel to cut the holes... still need to clean it up but i'm just lazy. It really has made a sound difference... I just really wish i had done it before removing the mufflers, so i could really hear what it sounds like.
Noticed a high rpm and high MPH increase... big difference at freeway speed...
