Engine Problems

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have a 1998 mk8 and on a hot day when i take off or accelerate my engine well rev to about 4 grand and then start cutting back and the more i push the gas the worse it gets. It acts as if the traction control has engaged but it hasnt. Also when its in neutral or park the engine wont rev up as fast as it should and it makes a sound like the rev limiter is kicking in but its about at 3500 RPMS. No check engine light has came on ever from this condition. I've pulled the coils off of it and checked for moisture and nothing is there. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks, Tyler

Sounds like fuel or spark to me. Maybe the pump is going out? Filter bad?

Can you do a fuel pressure test?

Posted by: duckmster

Yeah i did a fuel pressure test with it running and with it not running and i got 39 PSI. Which what i read was in operating parameters. I pulled the vacuum lines off the pressure regulaters and they are functioning. As soon as the engine cools off or sets for half an hour it runs and feels like it has its normal power. Do you know the signs of a coil on plug going out?

could have a tps that is malfunctioning.

when you tested the fuel pressure test was it hot and did you test it under load
Cause it does sound like a fuel pump

Hey Duck,

Most likely a fuel pump issue. Read my post over . Titled "fuel pump and info", the end is the fuel pump figures etc. It will be hard to catch at first, pressure will fluctuate also based on fuel tank level, load, duration of run time. In the begining the pump can tes out okay for a while. Mine was acting up intermitantly for 4 mos and couldn't catch it umtil hot weather hit. I still had to run if for over and hour till she tanked. The the longer I ran it the worse it got. First psi dropped to 22lbs, thaT LET ME HAVE 4 GRAND WOT. The it would dropp to 12lbs at wot. Note the pump did not read a fail psi until I was into the pedal a fair amount or wide open. The hotter it got the longer it ran the more psi dropped....only under load of acceleration. Cruising the pump maintained it's psi. See my other thread for a bit more info on this. Ps go drive the car with a pressure guage duct taped up right on the wiper arm. on the windsheild you will get wrong readings due to angle of view on the guage....now go drive around...soon as you get enough time on it the pump will heat up and then when you punch it you will see the pressure drop. note car runs stronger after a break due to pump rsting and cooling.

Sorry for the a$$ gramar in a rush and not going back to do the typos lol.
