ok, at full throttle the other night my rpms shot up to 7 grand... it felt like the car went into neutral but it was in drive. I let of the the gas and manually put it into first and it was fine and 2nd no problem. I also put it in drive and seemed to work fine. It only seems to do it when its floored but it only happened twice...
like when it goes to shift im thinking it just goes into neutral? is that the MLPS or is my trans done?

Where you shift from 3rd or 4th and at what speed?
Posted by: AbrahamLincoln
think it was more like 3-2 at like 40-50 mph

So OD was off?
Hmm.... could be MLPS then but my concern being that is only seems to happen at WOT.

well i got it home quickly after it started happening, i thought the tranny was toast so i laid down some sick burn outs on the way home(not in D)! then i went out with some friends on the town and when i came back there someone broke into my car by smashing my passenger side window and stole my new headunit. Wonderful.
i havnt really delt with all the glass and stuff yet so i havn't able to take it around to really figure it out but im hoping its the mlps... will it do it under light throttle heavy?
its definetly fine in manual shifting.... D well that yet to be seen... it def feels like it goes into neutral though so something is definetly wrong. And so far ive heard the mlps is a common thing and its not expensive or hard to replace either.

Well lets put it this way. Like you said, its easy to replace and thats true. It has to be aligned EXACTLY but thats not hard. Its about a $40 part and if you have not replaced it ever, then its certainly a good idea.
I guess it would be a cheap gamble.
Sorry to hear about you window. My 79 Mark V was smashed in and lit on fire. Well, they tried. The fire did not ignite enough to do any major damage.

The trans pump is on its way out. By manually shifting you're raising the pump pressure and getting it to shift fine. Not for long.

no i dont think thats it... the problem is 2nd gear... it engages if its coasting but if i give it gas it just feels like it goes into neutral its like slipping out. no matter if im in D or manually put it in 2nd.
Posted by: AbrahamLincoln
or when it's in 2nd i dont know if its disengaging or not but it the rpms shoot up and the car goes no where.
Posted by: AbrahamLincoln
also when in d i think the car just shifts from 1 to 3rd... it holds it in 1st more so im thinking that its like i lost 2nd gear

True that is.

dang dude, you have all kinds of trans problems. just start looking for a new one or a GOOD shop to rebuild yours.

ok well I took off the pan tonight and found that my oil filter was not even connected, but the gasket was still on there stuck in there pretty good. took the pan off and went through it expecting to see a lot of material. But there wasn't that much.
I bought new fluid and a new filter and gasket - while cleaning the pan and the magnet i found what looks like a little bit of plastic debris but not that much. Is that OWC made up of like a black plastic looking material.
Put everything back together and added new fluid. It goes through the shifter nicer but still have the same problem... no missing 3 and 4 gear. It holds first longer than normal and when its in 2nd it will slip after anything but light throttle.
but if i wot it in drive it'll seem to hold 2nd in the lower rpm's but not in the higher.
