Black Ooze from shift knob

My shift knob appears to be oozing black goo at the seams and it is some nasty stuff. What is it? Do they all do this or should I look for another knob?

That is just the leather lace on the shifter melting.

yea it happens in the summertime...use a sun shade to keep the heat down in your cab
