4.10 gears

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: 96mark8

I have a standered 96 mark can i fit 4.10's in my stock differential case or do i need a bigger case?

thanks

Any 8.8 ring gear will work.

Posted by: 96mark8

ok thanks alot

The stock diff is an open carrier. I'd suggest getting a Trac-Lok unit or better if your going to swap gears, or you'll really have a one-wheel peeler!

Yes, do the trac-lok as well, you might as well since you will have to get the carrier out anyways. i am doing mine on friday. hopefully i will do a writeup. I got my full kit from Max at Five Star Ford. Excellent price and great service..

Ditto on everything except I hope to have mine done by next week.

And it's a good idea to get a tune to adjust the shift schedule to go with the gears.

Or convert to a manual and have more fun anyway.

No.

The spider gears are different between the Solid axles and IRS

Posted by: 96mark8

ok so it has to be out of a irs cobra?

and do u guys think 4.10's would work good with a t56?

Posted by: 94m5

yes and no...............

99 cobra yes, later years, no

I dunno really about the gears, The T56 for the cobras don't have much difference in the OD ratios.

The t56 is like .62
the t45 is .68

If anything they would work better with the T45, because of the wider ratios between gears. (less shifting)

IF you could get an early Fbody T56, you can get a .5 over drive ratio which would be killer with 4.10's.

would 3.73 be better i guess?

Posted by: 94m5

I don't really know for sure yet man.

I'll know more this sunday after the 4.10's are in mine.

Posted by: 96mark8

Technically yes but have fun trying to get the axles out again.

Unless you you already have one or maybe if your upgrading to 03 Cobra clutches would just get a new one from Max. I think it was under $200

I have seen some Trak-Loc's out of newer SRA's that have beveled gears like our IRS's so if you see one for the right price just look at the side gears

Posted by: 94m5

I didn't realize this........ Do You have a picture of what we need to look for on the side gears?

Posted by: slowmkviii

best pic I could find in short time

Posted by: 94m5

Hrm,

I cant really see anything in those...... Ill look around on google for a pic.

If anything I have a precision lathe at work that I can use, I just need to know what needs done........

Depends a lot on how you drive. Drive it like grandma and it should last for years and tens of thousands of miles. Head to the track a lot with a high HP car and slicks and they will wear out pretty quick.

94m5,
Theres some info here on machining the side gears.
Also here (about 2/3 down.)
Very good pics of the difference here (I can email these to you if they don't show.)

Also, here's some pics of the FRPP side gears in the unit I just put in my car:
