what to do about filling removed chrome trim from bumper covers

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: warlockpain

here's an idea!

the color is actually red, dunno why it looks pink in the pics!
rear will get the same treatment soon.

Posted by: jamie97lsc

what did you use to do that? and if you did the front, and doing the rear, what about the sides of the car? give some more info what did you use and is it the same size as the factory chrome, how about a day time shot of it. what does it look like when its off and in the sun, thats pretty cool never seen that before!

Posted by: warlockpain

sides are getting smooth lsc trim, but it could be done there as well.
it's el lighting (part of my new business).
taking daytime shots tomorrow (weather permitting) but it's red in the daytime, just not lit. it's wired into my parking lights which made pics difficult. looks waaaay better in person.
i can get pretty much any color, width, and length.
attaches with 3M double sided trim tape.

can be flashed, setup with remote control, the possibilities are endless.

my company logo or the cobrastar logo will be lit in the back window via remote after i get the rear finished, just haven't decided which one!

Posted by: jamie97lsc

whats something like that cost, for the front and rear bumpers, and the sides, would you offer a kit? and can this be dimmed? alot of EL stuff can be used on a dimming module like your interior lights. i would love to put dark purple in my black 93 but i'd want to be able to dim it.

Posted by: mespock

In Wisconsin you can't have anything but red in the rear. Not sure about the front.

Posted by: warlockpain

i could assemble a kit using my car for the measurements. the only tricky part would be the sides, as the wires would have to pass through to the inside of the car. setting it up on a dimmer and remote would be no problem and purple is available. with the dimmer, you could dial in the exact shade you are looking for. pm me if you are serious and i could work up a quote on a kit.

as mespock stated, some state laws are strict on front and rear lighting colors. locally here, they don't say much about the color unless you flash the lights.that's why i wired in to the parking lights instead of the turn signals.

however, if it were set up with a remote as opposed to wired direct, you could turn it on and off at will therefore making it a show/offroad application.
they can't say much if it isn't lit while driving.

Posted by: 96hotrodlincoln

put some prices together, I'd be interested as well, would look good on my freshly painted 96. Maybe like a dark blue

Posted by: warlockpain

will do. i just need to know if you guys want it setup on a remote or wired direct and also if you want to be able to dim or flash it.

pm with requests as each kit would be tailored to get you exactly what you are looking for!

at this time,i could only put together a kit for the gen 1. i have no gen 2 available to get the measurements from.
can also backlight any logo,do interior accents, etc.

just let me know what you guys want!

I'm sorry but I just can't help it. GAY!

Posted by: ELight-Speed

I think he's got an awesome idea. Check out some of these pics! OK... maybe the pink panther is a bit GAY, but the rest are really cool.

Posted by: 96hotrodlincoln

I'd like some pricing on a blue kit, wired direct with the dimming capability.

Posted by: titleisttony

I'm sorry but I just can't help it. GAY!

That is some funny sh** right there! Are you sorry that you are gay? Or the lights?
I sort of agree, but everything has a place, and it takes all kinds, right?

Oh no, I'm not gay. Very far from it. Each to their own I guess, it's just not my cup of tea. It may appeal to the younger ricer guys. That Trans am is horrible looking, Does anybody actually like that? Geesh

They used to sell that stuff at pepboys back in the day.

Posted by: unity

I would have great interest also. But white would be my preferred color for the front. I guess pricing would dictate if I would do this though.

Posted by: warlockpain

turbo. there are better ways to increase your post count.

white is available unity. i'll work on getting some prices together.

Posted by: warlockpain

lol, btw turbo, tell all those casinos in vegas to turn off their gay lights!

I think the idea is kinda cool...in moderation! But the big firebird, and the hyundai are a bit much to be drivin around town. Car show, parking lot pimpin,or saturday night car club meeting would fit right in. Besides...here in north florida,if the cops see you riding around with that on your back window on fridays and saturdays,it's an invitation to get pulled over and hassled. And i hope some pilot doesn't mistake that hyundai for a heli pad and try to land. That thing is BIG! And the rhinestone thingys on that red shirt are a bit much It says SEE ME standing buy my cool bird....Yes,am the one with the sparkle trim on my shirt!
I'm sorry you guys,i just couldn't resist the joke!

It has all kinds of possibilities, have the sceptics not seen the future cars at the shows? Thinges like this is going to be the future, look at the interior of the MKR concept. Dont be so negative and close minded to things that may well be on your next new car. Lets try to think outside of the box long enough to let some new ideas in shall we?

THANK YOU! btw,the photos added by elight were not done by me or my company, and they were done for show/parking lot bling purposes.
the whole being pulled over for the lights thing is why i mentioned that it can be used in conjunction with a remote,so you can turn it off and on when you like.
sound and light competitions are becoming just as popular as your average car show. while i wouldn't bling/flash/and boom my own car, i would light up a whole darn car if that's what the customer wants. each to his own, your car is an expression of yourself, and some people and cars are more expressive than others!

Posted by: ELight-Speed

The most common uses I've seen for this type of lighting is in floor mats, sill lighting, and speaker/electronics lighting. There was a Bentley at the CES show that had the speaker wires backlit. That was an original idea. Everyone wanted to know where they could buy the "glowing" speaker wire. Freeform accent lighting on a car's exterior seems the next logical step.

Posted by: lunchmeat

I like. Dont know if I would do it or not. But great idea.

[quote=warlockpain;385345]turbo. there are better ways to increase your post count.

I could care less about my post count, It just looks like crap IMO. Some others like it, I don't. Deal with it.

Reminds me of something you would see at the illegal alien drag races.

Posted by: warlockpain

ahhh! opinions, gotta love em! lol

Posted by: devilchild

i would actually like to do a cobrastar in my rear window .. or do the "lincolnmotorsport" decals in my side windows .. not sure what color yet.. but definitely hooked up to remote... not something i would have on everyday... but once in a while just to show off..haha..

different.. not sure if i like the trim .. but its not my car so.. good job !!

looking forward to seeing what else could be made with this stuff

Don't forget the chickn' wire front grill

Posted by: poniesviii

I'd like a lit trunk emblem. But not backlit. Is it poss to have a lit emblem?

Posted by: warlockpain

devilchild. get geno's permission on either of those and i'll hook ya up!

poniesviii. do you mean just the logo lit and the background not? it can be done either way. just let me know what you have in mind.

email is warlockpain@hotmail.com

Posted by: poniesviii

cobra star, with the snake and lincoln star lit,; black background.

Posted by: warlockpain

for those of you interested in a kit, please bear with me. i'm currently looking for suppliers of potentiometers for the dimming feature.
i'll only use top notch parts, but still want to keep the cost as reasonable as possible.
devilchild and ponies,i'm working on your ideas as well.

Posted by: turborich

A question that nobody has asked, do you have any pics of it in the daytime? Does it fill in the area where the chrome was before?

Posted by: warlockpain

just took some today(not lit) and it does fill the recessed area. it doesn't bring it out flush with the bumper cover, but it does cover the inside of the recessed area. will post non lit pics shortly.

Posted by: warlockpain

yeah i know! i need to get a decent digicam. these pics do it no justice at all!

Posted by: kustomizingkid

Dang that stuff is pretty kool!

I might be interested in something, not for the Lincoln though.

Posted by: Battery

I'd like to see it in the same color as the car.

Posted by: unity

I wonder if it was spray tinted if it would still be plenty bright.

Posted by: PIMPLINC

That is just AWESOME TO THE MAX.....

I love that firebird!!

Posted by: warlockpain

kustomizingkid: you are only limited by your imagination (and wallet) lol

battery: it is currently offered in about 18 different colors, with the dimming option you can create even more, and if that's not enough you could get white and cover it in translucent vinyl in the color of your choice.

unity: i wouldn't recommend a spray on tint as the paint type chemicals may degrade the laminate moisture/uv barrier, however ,window tint might work but would definately darken the color when lit.

pimplinc: got any ideas for the mark?

to all: my contact info is in this thread, website is still under construction(check it out so far),but you can get me by email or phone anytime day or night and weekends.

Posted by: PIMPLINC

Well I must say then I want to buy the cobra R hood from Geno & get you to make Make A giant light up Cobrastar for the hood kinda like the firebird...

Let me know if it would be do-able and of course Geno's Permission for use of the cobrastar logo

that is the only Idea I have...and must say Just got me really excited

ohh and to Joey Could I get the LVC Logo made in to a big light up back window emblem in white???

Posted by: warlockpain

absolutely doable! wouldn't exactly be cheap(what on these cars is cheap?),but would be awesome!

as for the LVC logo, joey needs to chime in.
i've spoken with geno and we will be working together on the lit cobrastars.
the cobrastars will be on a per order basis, priced according to size, and will take a little time to make as each one will be custom cut.

IF<--- enough interest is generated on the lit cobrastar in a certain size, then they MAY be available through LMS.
Geno needs to chime in concerning this

Posted by: Speed Demon

Are the larger 'decals' cut from one large sheet or would they be formed from single strips put together? Can you sell just the sheets for us to do our own custom stuff? As far as painting, you can find plastic friendly clear coats. If they offer so many colored overlay options why not tinted also. Seems obvious that people would like to tint out during the day for a stealthy look. I wasn't too interest in this until I washed my car at a new autowash place and the two chrome strips behind the doors blew off. Black out or the tinted/dimmed red seems the way to go. Gino, pm sent.

Posted by: warlockpain

the larger stuff is cut from a single large sheet, but it must be relaminated to prevent moisture intrusion. this is not something for the average do at home project (custom cuts). in the end,you would probably find that it would be cheaper and quicker to just buy it already custom cut and overlayed.

the EL lighting was created for home/business/sign and auto use,so the blacking out was not factored into the design of the lamps themselves.

tinting (overlaying with translucent vinyl or window tint) would be the way to go.

Posted by: warlockpain

i'm redoing my front bumper cover strips in rich red instead of international red.
the international red looked a little too pinkish orange for me. rear will be done in rich red as well.

the cobrastar rear window logo (lit) is in the works.no word on an exact price as of yet.

for those of you interested in kits: to do the front and rear bumper covers only, in the color of your choice without the dimming feature will cost $175. to add the dimming feature, add $25. this kit will include 2 inverters to simplify the wiring.this does not include the recommended 1/4" 3m moulding tape to attach it.the 3m stuff can be bought at most auto parts stores.

if you want to do the sides as well,of course it will add to the overall cost.however i haven't nailed down a price on the side kits.

just to let people know, based on my measurements,to do the whole car takes approx 29 ft of el tape. for just the bumper covers it's close to 18 ft .the 2 front sections are 41" each and the rear measures 10ft!

Posted by: warlockpain

any interest? got 1 email with no follow up. or are you guys waiting for more pics????

Posted by: warlockpain

tested a strip behind dark tint. results were: when off it was blacked out. when lit,it was only barely dim, definately still very bright !
